Steel Tyrant
Background
General Nkosi Makaza, better known as the Steel Tyrant, began his rise to infamy as a prominent military officer during the height of apartheid-era South Africa. A brilliant tactician and charismatic leader, Makaza initially gained respect for his staunch resistance to oppression, rallying disenfranchised soldiers and guerrilla fighters under his command. However, his ambitions and methods became increasingly extreme as he sought to seize power not just for liberation but for domination.
In the late 1970s, after a devastating battle left him gravely wounded, Makaza turned to underground scientists and experimental technology to rebuild himself. His shattered body was fused with stolen military cybernetics and crude experimental augmentation, creating the hulking, unstoppable figure that would later be feared as the Steel Tyrant. Enhanced beyond human limitations, Makaza returned to South Africa and carved out a vast, authoritarian empire, crushing all opposition beneath his iron fist.
Makaza's reign was as brutal as it was effective. He declared himself the savior of his people but ruled with ruthless efficiency, employing child soldiers, constructing sprawling industrial zones, and deploying mechanized death squads to enforce his will. His actions drew the ire of international powers, resulting in his eventual exile.
Seeking a place to regroup and plot his revenge, he found his way to New Libertalia, where he rose to prominence as one of the original members of the Council of Six. As the leader of Iron Spire—a sprawling industrial district powered by laborers and mercenary enforcers—Makaza oversaw much of New Libertalia's technological advancement, focusing on weapons manufacturing and heavy industry. However, his brutal, uncompromising methods alienated his fellow council members, and he was ultimately deposed in a violent coup orchestrated by Lady Armora and Speedy Santos.
Now a shadow of his former self, Makaza lives in seclusion after faking his death, plotting his return to power and seething with hatred for the nation he once helped build.
Personality
Nkosi Makaza is a complex mix of intelligence, ambition, and bitterness. Once a charismatic leader with a vision for a better future, he has become consumed by his own lust for power and vengeance. He views weakness as a crime and has little patience for compromise or diplomacy, preferring to solve problems through brute force and domination.
Makaza is fiercely proud of his heritage but sees himself as a transcendent figure beyond race or nation—a messianic ruler destined to bring order to a chaotic world. His arrogance and lack of empathy have made him a divisive figure, even among his former allies in New Libertalia. Though he respects strength and cunning, he harbors deep resentment toward those who betrayed him, vowing to one day reclaim his place among the world's most feared and respected villains.
Despite his ruthlessness, there are rare moments of introspection where Makaza reflects on the path that led him to become the Steel Tyrant. These fleeting glimpses of humanity suggest that, beneath the layers of metal and rage, some fragment of the man he once was still remains—though it is buried deep under the weight of his own creation.
