Soul Cake Ballad

The Soul Cake Ballad is loosely inspired by The Chesire Souling Song at Mainly Norfolk and Wikipedia
Soul Cakes are a traditional Kredasene delicacy that have become a symbol of despair. Once commonly baked as a sweet treat, these are now baked solely during periods of sickness. It is believed that the attention of Raven's Handmaids, who guide the Souls of the deceased to Perdition, will be staved off for a little while in return for these sweet delicacies. These steamed cakes have a simple, dougy texture, and are traditionally filled with apple, pear or berries. It is believed the Handmaids will gather around the steam emitted from the baked goods, therefore allowing a dying peron's Soul to be reliquaried.
Bake me a soul cake, o' mother dear,
Bake me a soul cake to bring me good cheer.
Fill it with apple, with plums and with berries,
To safeguard my soul from Perdition to ferry

Bring me a Soul cake, o' mother dear,
My body is aching and death it draws near.
With spices and honey, let it be sweet,
In payment for my soul, my fate we shall cheat.

Bake me a soul cake, o' mother dear,
The handmaid's grasp I keenly fear.
In shadows they lurk, whispers they sneer,
But cakes they devour; souls they leave clear.

Remember this tale, when Handmaids draw near,
Thy Soul is thou treasure: conquer thy fear!
With Soul cake in hand and a heart full of grace,
Thy Soul will be free from death's cold embrace.
