Apprentice Master

And shall Teach and Instruct or cause to be Taught and Instructed, the said Apprentice in the Art, Trade, or Occupation of a Furniture Carpenters – which he the said Joshua Chubb – now useth, in the best Way and Manner he can during the said Term.
— Excerpt from the Indenture of Richard Phillips
An Apprentice Master is a person responsible for the training and housing of apprentices. Part of the terms of being a member of a professional Guild, requires an individual to take on a certain number of apprentices. Once that quota has been reached, the Master may not train any new students until after the others have finished the full term of their training.

Expectations

Apprentice Masters are expected to train their students in the best practices of their craft. They must teach them the practical skills needed to produce their goods and run a successful business.   The terms of an Apprentice Indenture transfers the care and upkeep of a child or young person over to the Master. The parents or guardians of said youth must pay a fee to the Master to ensure the child has good equipment for their training, is well-fed, and can dress appropriately for their position.   In small businesses, it is common for students to live alongside their Master and their families in the same residence. Some social commentators have voiced concerns that apprentices can be subject to abuse by the hands of their employers in such situations, including by means of making them act more like a household servant than a student. Other commentators raise the possibility of improper relations flourishing between members of the Master's household and the apprentices, and insist that these type of housing situation should be abandoned. Sometimes the youth will have their own room; rarely, they will share a room with the Master's own childnre; more often, they share sleeping quarters with the other apprentices.   In larger businesses or factories, Apprentice Masters take on the role of a headmaster rather than that of a surrogate parent. Apprentices are given a choice of communal dormitories, informal lodgings, or remaining living with their parents or guardians.
