soul

A soul is the incorporeal essence of a living being, comprising the memories, personality, imagination, emotion, reason, and potential of the person. Only sapient creatures have a soul. This includes all intelligent races of the Sora, most higher animals, and some plants and fungi. Creatures without souls, such as most insects, bivalves, and worms, react to stimuli in a highly predictable manner. Similarly, artificial creatures like golems and reanimated undead like zombies do not possess souls, instead only responding to commands from their controllers or following a preset routine. Such creatures are often able to be overcome simply by doing something that falls outside the scope of their routines.   Souls appear to be composed of something other than the elements which compose everything else. The current popular theory is that they are made of something known as pneuma, though the source or nature of this substance is not known.   When a creature with a soul dies, the soul most frequently travels to the afterlife appropriate for it. This soul retains all the personality, memory, and skills it had while living, though it becomes unable to change its personality or learn anything new, with only a limited ability to create new memories. On occasion a soul does not go to an afterlife for some reason, such as magical binding, rejection by the gods, or unfinished business in the mortal world. In such cases, the soul still leaves its mortal body but continues to wander the moral world, becoming known as a ghost. Ghosts which linger in the mortal world for too long risk transforming into demons.   Both souls in the afterlife and ghosts can potentially be returned to their mortal bodies, restoring them to life, through powerful magics or after undertaking difficult quests. The longer a person has been dead, the more difficult it is to return them to life. The methods to resurrect a person depend highly on the afterlife they are in and the rules established for it.
