Penumbra
Penumbra is a shadowrunner meeting place used by most in the business. It uses a diner as front, but maintains meeting rooms in the back for business dealings. It maintains basic security, but is primarily protected by mutual respect with corporate interests.
Purpose / Function
Penumbra is a meeting place used by corporations and other interested parties to make contact with shadowrunners. Although many places are used for such purposes, Penumbra is one of the few that makes a whole business model of it. Meeting rooms are maintained in the back, which use top-end technology to ensure privacy. It also has contracts with several major powers in Seattle to help maintain neutrality; should someone, whether runner or corporate, pick a fight with Penumbra or its staff, those major powers are prepared to step in and help maintain neutrality.
Architecture
Penumbra's front is that of an old-style diner, albeit with some modern aesthetical choices. Several booths are laid out, both for customers unaware of Penumbra's true purpose and for runners waiting to meet with their Mr. Johnson. It also has a bar, although the bartender has specific instructions to cut off runners about to go into a meeting.
The back rooms are brutalist and pragmatic with very little decoration. The walls were built to prevent any sound from leaving the meeting rooms and a wide array of sensors are used to ensure that no bad actors get information they shouldn't have. Rumors state that Penumbra also has recording devices in most of the meeting rooms, but the staff have not commented on this one way or the other. In any case, no information has ever been leaked due to a meeting in Penumbra.
Defenses
On the surface, Penumbra appears to be completely undefended. A bouncer guards the enterance to the backrooms, but aside from that most visitors will never interact with any real security. Penumbra staff insists, however, that very real security forces exist within the building, with more than enough resources to deal with troublemakers while waiting for bigger guns from upper corporations to show up.
