Hecatean Cats

Hecatean Cats are a magical species of sentient cats that live on The Wandering Moon Hecate. They are known to be companions to the Hecatean witches, but one should never make the mistake of thinking them as pets, at that is one of the worst mistakes that can be done and one of which will earn the eternal grudge of these cats. They rarely leave their home moon, but yet their reputation for accurate visions and divination is well known. So well know that many seek to reach the Wandering Moon to seek their assistance in important matters and decisions. Charms and amulets created by the Hecatean Cats are also highly sought after. The more tails a cat has the more potent its magic is believed to be.

Naming Traditions

Unisex names

All Hecatean Cat names are unisex. While their family names are descriptive, their given names are composed from syllables the cats find pleasant sounding. Arora, Rurale and Ralana are examples of these kinds of names, every other phone usually being a vowel.

Family names

Hecatean Cats are all about ancestry. Thus, their family names are the names of the founders of the families. They are usually descriptive names, like Keenclaws, Darkfur or Leaphigh.

Other names

If a Hecatean Cat joins the Priestesses of Baast, they are given a new descriptive name with a honorific "Sister" added in front of it, creating names such as Sister Sharpeyes. Their original given name can still be used among their friends and family, but in formal occasions they are referred by their new name.

Culture

Shared customary codes and values

Hecatean Cats are a matrimonial society, where the female (used here as a gender, not a sex) hold the most power. They are the heads of their families and have hold the highest positions both as the priestesses and the mundane leaders. Otherwise, there are very few gender norms.
A high value is given to magic, and the more magical potential an individual has, the more likely they are to end up in high positions. A number of tales is an indicator of magical potential, so the more tales a cat has, more valued they are.

Ideals

Beauty Ideals

Hecatean Cats put a great value on their fur, so the more shiny the fur, the more beautiful it is seen as. Because of the association with The Goddess Baast, darker colours are culturally regarded as the most desirable ones, though of course the exact preferences are different for every individual. Bright, jewel coloured eyes are also thought to be very attractive among the Hecatean Cats.
