The Wailer Myth in The Savage Woods | World Anvil

The Wailer

Once, there was a great warrior in a Karuvian village deep in the woods. He rose above all others, and received praise and glory for his prowess. With his ability, however, came arrogance and cruelty. Jealous of his prestige and tired of his rude, entitled attitude, four other men from the village came together to decide to get rid of him. They asked him to lead them on a hunt, and he gladly took the lead into the forest with them. Deep in the forest, the others snuck up behind him and struck him in the head with a club, and then left him to die.

Refusing to die, he bound his lua to his body with a powerful song. For 9 days, his undead body slowly grew in power. All the while, he wailed a mournful song, steeped with the desire for retribution and revenge. The villagers nervously attributed the distant wails to a rare bird, but every night it grew closer and closer. The closer it got, the more they could make out of the words singing for vengeance, blood, and dismemberment.

On the 9th night, he returned to his village as revenant, bone-thin with dead skin clinging to his frame. One by one, he visited the homes of those who had wronged him and ripped out their hearts with his clawed hands. Terrified villagers attempting to drive him off, but their arrows bounced off his skin and their swords failed to hit his speedy frame.

After slaughtering those who had tried to kill him, he retreated into the woods. Legend says that Uhaaki still roams the forest, wailing in rage at his murder. Anyone who betrays and endangers a comrade goes on to live in fear of hearing a wailing voice in the distance, dreading that it will grow louder night by night until the creature reaches them to exact punishment.

Uhaaki

The creatures that now stalk the woods are the very real and very confirmed-to-exist uhaaki. Similarities between their appearance and the creature from legend led to a frightened populace attributing the name from myth to the modern monsters. However, there is no real connection between the story and the monsters beyond a surface-level similarity.
