Lillau
Puud ta eipääjään, Litaiamadul ää aik jerääThe most reliable and celebrated spirit in Veiama is Lillau, the Fire Hare. Lillau is the sun, and in a land with extreme winters and short summers, she is always appreciated. Lillau is a special spirit, because she is not simply a natural manifestation of a god's power, but the god's own tausai .
No matter how dark the night, Litai will bleed again at dawn
Just after the world was created, all life lived in cold and darkness and struggled to survive. The gods feared their project would fail, because living things could not flourish in darkness the way they - beings crafted of starlight - could.
Litai was the one to find a solution. She took a sword and plunged it into herself, creating a grave wound to drive away her tausai. The hare left and took its place in the sky, where it became the sun. The world was basked in light and the gods celebrated Litai's sacrifice. However, Litai's wound soon began to heal, and her tausai began to sink out of the sky to return to her. When her tausai came back to her, the world was dark once more.
But Litai knew that the plan worked, so she did it again. Once more, the tausai left to become the sun, and once more, it returned to her when her wound had healed. Thus began an endless cycle: every morning, Litai wounds herself to create the sun, and every evening, she heals and night returns.
For her daily sacrifice, she is honoured as one of the greatest of gods. Although most people today don't literally believe the myth, "Lillau" is used as a poetic way to refer to the sun. She is depicted as a snowshoe hare made out of fire, curled up in a ball.
