Cheitosnu (Nonlit. 'Without Family')

Public socioanthropological record
Property of the Royal Atheneum of Hövnís, Eörpe

The cheitosnu make out the lowest social class in Ascendancy society, comprised of all individuals that for one reason or another isn't a member of a recognized Ascendant Family. They are often referred to as 'sub-citizens' by outsiders criticizing the Ascendancy's treatment of them, which is meant to their severe lack of comforts and rights in comparison to even the lowliest of families.

Etmyology & Definition

The name 'Cheitosnu' is lusoyan in origin and can be contextually translated to 'Without Family'. This shouldn't be taken literal in the sense as most other cultures tend to interpret the term family: within the Ascendancy a family is primarily a social class where members don't need to have a blood relation to each other. It's thought that this familial system and the lusoyans' cultural view on kinship is a longlasting remnant of their Bieggjan ancestry.   They could also sometimes be called 'Chachen', which translates simply to 'Not Me'. The term has existed for a long time in the Ascendancy and originally was a very demeaning and overweening way of addressing someone of less fortune than yourself. Today, it's generally viewed as derogatory to call them chachen instead of cheitosnu, and at least isn't as frequently used in public spaces.

History

Origin

The social class of Cheitosnu is thought to trace its origins to the logistics of integrating the recently conquered Atramen Empire into the Ascendancy, circa 7900 years ago.   It was originally only meant for non-lusoyan sapient species, but the great reformations of the judicial system circa 300 years ago also made it possible for lusoyans to be stripped of their family status and become cheitosnu as a permanent criminal sentence.

Habitat & Population

The cheitosnu are found on most worlds in the Ascendancy at varying populations, often with restrictions imposed on them in terms of where they may live, work, and even travel. This has led to many being more or less enclosed to dedicated ghettos at the outskirts of cities and towns. These ghettos would have originally been built close to the menial labor workplaces their inhabitants were expected to take a job at.

Allowances

A cheitosnu has the rights to the absolute bare minimum when it comes to civil rights, health care, social service & security, as well as employment security.   A cheistosnu is entiteled to a small pre-furnished home of their own (typically one-room if alone, 2-3 rooms if they live together with others), and will be offered a small selection of menial labor jobs they have to choose between. Basic health care is free, but more complicated diagnosises and treatments will have to be paid for. A weekly shipment of food and amenities will be handed out calculated based on the number of individuals in the household and their assumed needs.   They follow the same work schedule setup as the rest of the Ascendancy, but with the difference that if they choose to do the compulsory weekly hours they won't earn any wage and instead all the wage they would have gotten goes toward paying the rent and cost of food and amenities they're already receiving.   An individual can choose to work up to 50% additional hours, which will earn them a small wage of the Ascendancy's primary currency. A cheitosnu can never earn the secondary currency, and any cheitosnu found in possession of the secondary currency run the risk of criminal persecution. The wage earned through working additional hours will automatically be deposited into a personal account at the end of each week, and may either be saved or can be spent at certain shops located in close proximity to a ghetto.

Culture

Cheitosnu are split into a myriad of sub-ethnicities and cultures, depending on their ancestral origin, environment and many more factors. Some groups have tried their best to preserve their ancestral culture and traditions at varying degrees of success, most notably those consisting of only akreian members.

These poor people. I found myself thinking that at least they're guaranteed housing and food, but it doesn't really make up for how they are treated, really. Great article.

Thank you. <3 I had a lot more I wanted to add but had to keep it short due to time constraints for SC. I can't wait to expand it to touch more on their living conditions, add some subcultures, and illustrate the relations between them and their oppressors better.
