Drákos Prostátis

Awesranka has experienced extremely rapid change - political, social, and economic - since the fall of the Red Empire. In 1436, the Free Cities of Awsranka was established, based on the model of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy. Government was reclaimed to promote the common good, protect the rights of each citizen, and support the rule of law. Between taxes for the common infrastructure, responsive courts, and some government oversight, the days of the "dragon barons" are over. But not everyone is happy.

Depending on who you are talking to, Drakos Prostatis is a political party, or a terrorist group, or religious cult. A very few populist leaders are vocal supporters of the idea that Awsranka was better off with a Dragon Protector. In certain parts of Awsranka, they enjoy great support, though they rarely gain enough political power to actually do anything. In fact, no dragons have been sighted in Awsranka these past 100 years.

Expanded protections for the rights of all citizens in the Free Cities has not been uniformly welcomed. Humans have lost their privileged social status, which had been gained at the expense of others, particularly the Dvergur. However, Dvergur communities and individuals still face discrimination and even racially motivated violence. Last year a newly opened mine in the Blue Mountains was sabotaged, resulting in the deaths of several miners, human as well as dvergur. A historic temple in Grytack is vandalized on a nearly monthly basis. Anonymous broadsheets blame the Dvergur for everything from the price of ore, to the "decline" in social morals.

Change has been rapid in the past fifty years. Many, human and others, can only see that their opportunities have diminished. In addition, politics have become much more complicated, as we continue to run our experiment in self governance. As a rule, D.P. sympathizers long for simpler days when an emperor ruled by fiat, and politics were about who could supply the most gold for his hoard. Others had taken advantage of the dragon-centric government of Awsranka, and had operated their business with, shall we say, less than stellar ethics. Between taxes for the common infrastructure, responsive courts, and some government oversight, the days of the "dragon barons" are over.

The government in Synthesis has often considered D.P. to be a collection of people dissatisfied modern Awsranka. Eagleswatch believes that there is more to this group than grumblings in the pubs and reactionary politicians. Those in our leadership remember that the Brigadier of Fornradur's army was a death knight. His destruction was never confirmed, and it is quite possible that he continues to exist, focused on his only task- to preserve the Empire.
  • serves as a pool of safehouses/ information sources for the remnants of the empires powers - specifically the Gore Crow .
  • also spreads misinformation on behalf of Gore Crow
  • misinformation spread intends to convince lower classes that they need protection of a dragon (fear of return to orc wars, costs of keeping standing military and taxes it requires, influx of non-human peoples to Awsranka
  • public arm led by popular politician from Kenniwick (old Empire capitol)

Draconis Prostatis( in the old phastian - Dragon Protector.) A shadowy group that only a few publicly claim membership. It is presently unknown just how many members or sympathisers there are in Awsranka.

The following are quotes from different perspectives.
We had a stronger defense when Fornradur was emperor, no one dared to cross our borders with ill intent. I mean, what army wants to face a fire breathing dragon?
It was easier to get by in those times. Sure, gold was just not available to anyone, but you can't eat gold can you? Taxes on just about everything else were almost non-existant; people kept more of what the made and food was a lot cheaper.
Well, of course the Emperor wasn't human, but that was an advantage. He wasn't human, dwarven, elven or anything like that. He was a complete outsider. He could get things done because he wasn't beholden to anyone.
One hundred years ago, we threw off the yoke of the Red Emperor, Fornradure. The red dragon had become increasingly oppressive as he aged, many suspected that he was succumbing to the mental breakdown that sometimes afflicts the elder. The dragon demanded our fallen athletes as tribute, to satisfy his craving for blood. The dragon set his followers to wring every last crumb of gold from the land and the people. He attempted to enslave the dwarves, and drove them underground; impoverishing our land of skills and knowledge. While his presence discouraged other nations from raiding, he deliberately weakened our defenses and beat down any attempt to criticize the state.
We were not free while the dragon ruled.

I really like this. Change can be hard, even if it's for the better. It's well thought out and feels more real than the, "happily ever after," that some stories go with when there's a big political change.
