Session 0. - Look What The Tide Washed In

General Summary

12th of Hearthfrost, 1439 A.P.

A merchant trading vessel, The Star of Khalani, out of Khedris got caught in an early winter storm and suffered severe hull damage. It crashed into another ship, The Sunreaver, out of Jotunheim, both managed to limp into the small village of Palebank in search of repairs. The village has a deep water harbour but is ill-equipped to handle the repairs of such large vessels. The nearest port that could make the repairs is Balenpost (where the ship was headed), several days sail to the west (and a week or more by land).

The season is turning and the ships, crew (and passengers) are likely stuck here until spring while the captains arrange repairs or alternative transport.

The same winter storm that wrecked the ships also snowed in the overland pass to Balenpost. Effectively trapping everyone until the pass clears. None of the locals are willing to risk their small coastal vessels this late in the season to travel to Balenpost for the supplies.

Palebank village is a small fishing village on the southern coast of the Jotunar Peninsula, a chain of mountainous islands off coast of The Jotunlands. The population is primarily a mix of humans of Jotunar and Bhandar descent with a few scattered non-humans. Balenpost, to the west, acts as the gateway to the North and most sea traffic stops there first before heading further northeast to Jotunar proper.

Several weeks to the southeast lies Northwinter Isle. An island chain in the middle of the Northwinter Sea, which acts as a trading waypoint for sea traffic between The Jotunlands to the North, the Bhanate Kingdoms to the west, and the kingdoms of Khedris and Phaeros to the south.

The nearest village further west is Shady Creek, known to be run by the Urthgardt family (they have a less than friendly reputation and often charge exorbitant “handling “ fees for goods travelling through Shady Creek enroute to Balenpost)

The peninsula’s biggest claim to fame is that parts of one of the fabled floating cities from days long past, before the Meradassian Empire ended, was discovered in the Eiselcross Mountains about 50 years ago. Treasure hunters and historians have surged north to stake their claims and find their glory. Most travel north to Balenpost and from there to Palebank or it’s rival, Shady Creek, as they have the nearest, and easiest passes through the Eiselcross mountains.

The adventuring party, colloquially known as The Usual Suspects, consists of:

  • Captain Oorr Rosetta del Hilltopple, a male Faun from Balenpost who made the journey to Palebank before the snow to support the local constabulary against an upswing in Urthgardt activity.
  •
  • Arbor Nox, a male Goblin, was a passenger on the Star of Khalani. He was heading north following a rumour that his father, the infamous sorcerer Arbol, was last sighted in the area.
  •
  • Urith Thane, a male human of Jotunar descent, was a passenger on the Sunreaver, heading to Balenpost from his stedding near Grimnir to sell his village’s harvest of Frost Naga hides. Unfortunately, most of his wares were lost overboard in the storm.
  •
  • Suljurn sah-Ghad, a male Saurial, is a seeming juxtaposition. He states that he is a historian seeking knowledge at the behest of his God, Ogham, but he is dressed and equipped for war. He travelled into town with Captain Oorr.
  •
  • Angrar Ironbrow, a large male Half-Ghrym, was a guard for a merchant on the Star of Khalani. He is just recently (and very unexpectedly) unemployed when his employer was lost overboard during the storm.
  •
  • Deadeye Cliffhanger, a young male Kenku, woke up in a snowbank this morning for the first time in his life. Not only was he in a snowbank, but he had no idea how he got there. On top of that, he could see the ocean! The Ocean!!! He walked in to town with the dawn and is trying to find his bearings.
