Great Wolves

The Great Wolf is the most widely used non-mechanical form of transportation on Nhaie(add link), aside from one's own two feet. Due to the absence of wild horses, humans went looking for a different species to use as transportation. For some reason, the Great Wolf was found formidable, and is now extremely popular throughout both the E.H.(add link) and the W.H.(add link).   An interesting creature, the Great Wolf is like any wolf one might have found on Earth, excepting a few facts: 1) They are much larger; and 2) They have an interesting ability that can only be described as x-ray vision (see "Perception & Sensory / Extrasensory Capabilities"). Their fur has a luxurious thickness to it and is the color of pure silver (which appears to glow in moonlight). These qualities make it a popular material in the making of cloth, book covers, and some other products. There are also businesses known to ship loads of Great Wolf fur to Magn(add article) in different locations on the planet Obriin(add article), for use in the making of staffs and other such objects.   The Great Wolf originated in the E.H.(add link), living both at the poles and in the humid areas at the bases of mountains. A versatile species, the Great Wolf can live practically anywhere on the planet, except right along the equator and right along the G.C.H.(add link), where the temperatures are much too hot for creatures with such thick fur to bear.   On that note, one might ask why on Nhaie(add link) a species with such long, thick fur has evolved to be this way on such a warm, humid planet. This is a very reasonable question, one which not many scientists have attempted to answer, but some hypotheses do exist; as follows:
  1. This theory has been debunked by the discovery of the wolves' x-ray vision (along with the fact that it wasn't a very sturdy hypothesis in the first place), but used to be held as quite popular among researchers: For some reason, the species needed resistance to the waves of magical energy emanating from Nhaie's core(add link). Every ecosystem needs non-magical creatures, so maybe it was simply in this way they managed to avoid being seriously affected.
  2. It is highly possible that the Great Wolf's shining fur is a mating tactic - the individuals with the shiniest fur are found most attractive. The Great Wolf breeds every other year, on on-years, when the moon, Juna(add article), is orbiting Nhaie(add link). It is possible that, in the light of the moon, the wolves with the fur that glows the most are favored. This could be an evolutionary thing.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Like the wolves one might have seen on Earth, the Great Wolf has four limbs (excluding the tail), all legs - two in front and two in back. Great Wolves have rather fluffy tails. Lean and strong, the Great Wolf is a powerful runner, though it cannot jump very high for its size. Around 5'5" in height from bottom of paws to tips of ears, the Great Wolf is a frightening creature (not even considering its strong jaws and extremely loud howl).

Ecology and Habitats

While the Great Wolf can be seen all over Nhaie, as many have been tamed by humans and taken to both hemispheres, wild Great Wolves can only be found on the E.H.(add link). Typically found around the poles, this species has adapted to live in the coldest places on Nhaie. Those that do not live at the poles are typically found around the bases of mountains, in the quite humid environments found there.       Carnivores, this species munches on creatures of varying sizes, from large, bear-like creatures(add article), to tiny, rodent-like creatures(add article). Otherwise, this species does not affect the environment much.

Additional Information

Perception and Sensory Capabilities

Most senses equivalent to that of a typical wolf, except the Great Wolf has x-ray vision capable of seeing through non-natural materials (and non-natural materials only). They have an extremely loud howl that is, occasionally, deafening.
Scientific Name
Yonha Canis Brontolupii
Lifespan
25 years
Conservation Status
LC (Least Concern)
Average Physique
Very strong, very fast, and quite scary (in the wild). Not a creature one would want to cross.
Body Tint, Colouring and Marking
The fur of this species is pure silver, with light gray patches here and there. In the moonlight, the Great Wolf looks as if it's glowing.
Geographic Distribution
See Species Classification for how the trinomial and quadratic classifications work (why species' scientific names are what they are)
