Xylene

Xylene is an earth genasi warlock who studied at Seer's Sight Tower in the western fey wilds. Many of his classmates considered him a conspiracy nut and sociopath, as he cared for nothing but his research in obscure legends. His latest craze was the study of The Wish, the Elixir and the Philosophy, believing it to be based on truth that could be exploited. When Silihadron called upon some Seer's Sight warlocks to head to Tumult to investigate the Frittian anomaly which sparked the Frozen War, Xylene tagged along as his research directed him to a community of other believers in Felicity. But, Xylene was not so sharing in the information he gathered, wanting to keep the secrets of the book and the promise it offered to himself. He thus killed the other believers after learning what they had learned.   This left a trail of bodies which caught the eye of Tomias Flitterfoot. Xylene had no choice but to join this unfavorable partnership as Tomias could easily call upon the authorities to arrest Xylene. But Tomias' treachery came via a different route, as he stole Xylene's research and sent a party of murderous adventurers after him led by Lord Kourend Salmonpuddle. He was not killed though, as the adventurers simply held him prisoner, as they needed an informant against the plans of Tomias Flitterfoot.   Xylene stayed under the employ of Lord Salmonpuddle even through his imprisoning after the regicide of King Iscalon the Fourth. He had no where else to go, as the Seer's Sight warlocks have excommunicated him for his crimes. After Kourend escaped the gith prison, the Pit, with the Dragon of the Deep, Xylene left Felicity to become a crew member on that ship of criminals. He worked as a privateer for a while, until a couple of his crewmates, a halfling cleric named Piper and the green dragon Brithe, asked him about his pursuit of The Wish, the Elixir and the Philosophy. Since the news of Kourend's death at the hands of Tomias and the Wish has reached the ship, Xylene resumed his research on the book for the two other figures. Piper, who was crippled in the prison break, became quite interested in the idea, and convinced Brithe to join them in the search.   Thus began their journey north to find the Elixir and the Philosophy. Along the way, two of the Heel's and Laughter entertainment troupe, Ilee the goblin child who was saved by Kourend during the Dance Incident of 1040 and Ralrius her arcane trickster tiefling caretaker, joined them. Not long after that, they also picked up a nameless gnome child.   They would go to form the Ratcatcher Adventurers Guild, working around the Valley Droplet region and the Church of Veritas. Xylene spent most his time running operations in Church territory after their guild became prominent. While their branch was in the Blasphemous Hole, when the Philosophy was found in the Cosmic Observatory, Xylene would be in that city more time than naught. This is because he learned of the trap which the Philosophy was, an apostle of the Mineosian Paragon of Truth. He thus had to make sure no one would hear those bewitching utterings. He unfortunately could not keep the Uz from finding the angel, though he was lucky that the Uz were smart enough not to listen to the celestial. But they did make a weapon out of it in one of their ploys to kill Dread Sins.   In 1102, the Eternal Empire invaded the Cosmic Observatory. Xylene figured this meant the Uz would use their weapon on the invaders. While he had no love for the Eternals, he did not want them to fall under the influence of Truth's apostle. He happened upon a eternal paladin named Urg who said he would help Xylene get to the Observatory. With their combined efforts, Xylene knowing a secret route and Urg diverting Eternal curiosity, they made it to the top of the tower to catch a group of Eternals about to discover the Philosophy. While Xylene worked to change their memories (his method to keeping the Philosophy secret), the hobgoblin Urg betrayed Xylene by uncovering the angels mouth and broadcasted the Philosophy's words to one of the Eternal carriers. Urg did not hear the truth the celestial muttered as he blocked his hears while the whole thing was going down. The Philosophy was then freed, his words propagated to a new host.   Xylene, someone who heard the truth before and was tethered to the being, vanished with the angel knowing not to trust the Eternals again. Unfortunately, he would let have his fill of Eternals in the coming months. Xylene would become the emissary's Proclaimer, leading the heart of the infection into the Lesvetter in the coming months. Many would succumb to this affliction because of him, a fate he wished on no one. But hope was not lost for the poor man, as a team of Ratcatchers infiltrated the infection to rescue him.   Despite their attempt, the Ratcatchers failed to rescue Xylene, and he was slain by Shotglass Joe and his team of near sorrowsworn.

Personality Characteristics

Motivation

He sought power and fame, which he hoped to get via his research of The Wish, the Elixir and the Philosophy. This changed when he confronted the Philosophy and learned how this power will destroy. While still a seeker, he seeks to contain it more than harness it.

Vices & Personality flaws

He is a bit sociopathic, not caring about killing to get his way. His partnership with the More cleric Piper has seen steps to mend this uncaring mindset, but attachments come slowly.
