Lantern of Sorrow

Lanterns of Sorrow are artifacts containing echoes of the Seraph of Spring. They vary from corrupted to benedictive, depending on what memory the Seraph contained in them. They are usually found in or near fallen Uls in the Summer and Fall seasons, but some survive far longer than that. People who hold these Lanterns are often gifted great power, but at a price.   The one on the Veritian Leaf was discovered by the Val'ul mages and used as a weapon in the Val'ul war of secession from Tumult. It was lost in that war for many years, but was then discovered by the uncle of Dr. Caskajaro, was passed down to his nephew, and after his death in 1040 came into the hands of King Bedrich of Tumult. This Lantern specifically gave the bearer lich like powers. This specific lantern came into being in the Spring prior to the summer of the Veritian Leaf, when one Ul Salvation had to be abandoned by the Seraph of Spring to appease the ire of a Hahlian time god who did not like how a group of criminals were messing with the timeline. One of these criminal, Creed, became the first holder of the lantern, becoming the master of Ul Salvation during that period.

Mechanics & Inner Workings

Within the Lantern whose blue flames glow ominously is the echo of a god. To the common person, this echo seems to be sentient. The influence of the Lantern is all consuming.

Significance

The significance of this artifact to the Veritian Leaf is that it currently gives the king of Tumult power over death, which he plans to use against the Dormant Cult.

Rarity
These artifacts are more common at the beginning of the ten thousand years of summer, as that is when the echoes of spring begin. They grower rarer and rare over time, as without someone to hear the echo it fades, and many of which are never found. There are probably one for every twenty continental leaves (which number in the millions, but since most people do not travel between more than 3 continental leaves in their lives makes them quite the rarity). They are rarer still the further the season progresses, as many of these echoes are evil in intent and thus are hunted and destroyed.
