The Lost Systems

The Lost Systems are a group of star systems formerly classified as part of the Outer Systems, but considered distinct following the Antimatter Crisis. They were sparsely populated even before the crisis, and considered generally unimportant. As such, when the Outer Systems' Gateways were being restored, those leading to the Lost Systems were deemed to be of low priority, and to this day have never been reopened.   It is estimated that between 10-20 million people live in the Lost Systems aboard spaceborne habitats or on the surface of inhospitable but minerally rich planets. Most of these people live in poverty, barely able to feed themselves through hydroponic farming and trade with Stellar Nomads and criminals. Humanitarian aid from the rest of Human space is rare due to the lawless nature of the region, particularly since the destruction of the Odion Expedition and so-called Lost Systems War that followed.   Today, the Lost Systems are almost exclusively visited by Stellar Nomads, pirates, and smugglers, who make the journey using jump drives. These visitors commonly trade illicit goods with the local populations, or extract resources from the planets and asteroids of the Lost Systems. Anti-piracy expeditions are occasionally launched by governments in the Outer Systems, though they are often ambushed or simply unable to catch their quarries due in part to unfamiliarity with the region.   The Lost Systems are perhaps best known in popular culture as the site of exploration missions by daring adventurers seeking to restore contact to lost colonies and locate alien artifacts. It has also been alleged that they are the ultimate resting place of the missing Tavastian Armada that disappeared at the Battle of Orizont during the Tavastian War. However, most of these stories are the result of fictional accounts based on or inspired by conspiracy theories, such as those of Darryl Joneson, who alleged that robots and automated warships left over from the Tavastian War are organising into a collective intelligence intent on the destruction of Humanity.
