Stellar Exploration Initiative
The Stellar Exploration Inititive (SEI) is an Earth-based non-government organisation dedicated to the exploration of the galaxy and the advancement of humanity's scientific knowldge. While the Initiative is nominally an independent civilian organisation, and explicitly espouses pacifism in its charter, its exploration vessels are highly armed due to operating in dangerous regions of space. The SEI also has close ties to the central government of the United Leagues of Earth, and serves to bolster the ULE's influence in many regions of human space that lack a ULE military presence. For these reasons, the SEI is often viewed as little more than an unofficial arm of the ULE's military, and is viewed with distrust by many in the Outer Systems, despite the Initiative regularly engaging in humanitarian missions and generally respecting local laws and customs.
