Session 17: A Lonely Tree on a Lonely Hill

General Summary

Our mighty companions cleared out the Wizard of Wines microwinery, effectively dealing with the druids by murdering them, as well as dealing with the remaining blights by sending them into the forest with the use of the Gulthias Staff. Davian was quite pleased at this, and requested them to find three gems that essentially power his vineyard, granted to his ancestor by the powers of the land itself. One was stolen years ago, whilst the Vallaki innkeep (Davian’s son) was supposed to be on watch. One was taken by Lysaga’s constructs several months ago. The last one was taken by the druids that overran the winery, only days ago. Should the party find themselves in need of wine, they can come to Davian.
Gixx and Carren set out for Yester Hill, the hill to the south of the winery, to look for this third gem and perhaps get some answers from the druids. As they arrived, they decided that it was getting quite late and set out back for the winery to have a night’s rest instead. The next morning, they once again set out for Yester Hill. Third time’s the charm. As they arrived, the hill was quiet. As they crested the hill, they set eyes upon a rather evil looking tree, much alike to the staff they had, but decided to ignore this for the time being and instead hide and wait for the druids to show up. It took awhile, but they did show up, once more commencing the same ritual as before. With the aid of many twigs, as well as some hard-hitting punches, they down most of the druids. However, it seems not fast enough. The last remaining druid falls unconscious as the statue erupts as a massive tree boy bursts out. The fight goes on for a while, and Gix gets pummeled quite badly. Somehow, however, he pulled through, and with a barrage of magic the tree was brought down and the gem was taken from its insides. They also tied up the remaining druid and dragged him back with them to the winery, then threw in the now empty cellar. The gem itself was reburied by Davian, which should slowly start the regrowth of his vineyard.
They dined with Davian and his family, and afterwards Davian let them in on his family’s secret. They form the Keepers of the Feather, an ancient order of wereravens, that have covertly opposed Strahd for as long as they have been here. There are not many left, but they make excellent scouts and information brokers. Should they require information or messaging, they can call upon them.
The remainder of the morning was spent interrogating the druid. They learned a bit about the Gulthias Tree, as well that Strahd sometimes comes to Yester Hill to look at the wall of mist to the west of it. More importantly, they learned about the fanes of the Ladies three, and after some impressive persuasion managed to get something out of him connecting these fanes to the power of the land itself taken by Strahd. They recalled that one of the stones they passed close to the winery fitted to this description, the marking of the eye relating to the Huntress. They asked Davian to research this more, and Davian agreed to let them know by Raven what he finds out.
Lastly, they set out back towards Vallaki to question Urwin about the long lost gemstone. They found the lost caravan mentioned in the bounty notice, but otherwise had little trouble traveling the lands. However, a change in power seems to have taken place in Vallaki. Instead of the guardsmen at the gate, there now stand robed figures wearing masks. Our party bribes them with wine, then set out into town at dusk.
Andrius spend the day drinking with Davian Martikov, enjoying their wine. The next morning, he slept out his hangover as Carren of Rizelia and Gix Garrix were torturing their captive.
