Gix Garrick The Rock Gnome Artificer       How old are they chronologically, and how old do they appear? Gix is 100 years old. He appears young for a gnome.     Physical characteristics, standard clothing and equipment. About 100 cm / 3.5 feet tall, Slender build. Light complexion, but not pale. Currently wears scale mail, brown leather pants, and boots. Has two daggers sheathed on his belt and has a belt pouch which contains various gadgets. Wears a backpack which contains things that are not immediately needed, but nevertheless are good to have, such as tools, rope, and various other knick-knacks. His clothes are practical and unadorned. Gix is not very strong, relying on his mechanical tools rather than brute force to solve problems. Has short, dark hair and a short beard. Has a broad jaw. His eyes are Green.     Secondary characteristics - accent, tone of voice, mannerisms, ticks etc   Emotional characteristics - are they prone to getting angry/laid back/investigative/despondent etc, personal prejudices? Investigative and curious. Loves finding out how things work. Interested in magical items, rare ingredients, ore, or anything that might work as part of a gadget or tool of some sort. Is usually friendly towards others, although he dislikes people making fun of his gadgets, or his height. Has a need to prove his worth and his tinkering skills. Is open towards other races, although mostly in their magic and technology, rather than their customs or religions.   How do their emotional characteristics affect how they interact with people/groups? Generally friendly towards others. Will ask a lot of questions. Very interested in speaking with professionals or magic users. Willing to do adventuring work, both to test out new inventions and to gather money for purchasing magic items, raw materials, rare books, and other things that might help in the invention of new gadgets     Alignment, motivation and character flaws/needs Alignment: Closest to Chaotic. Believes that people should be free to pursue their own livelihood. Believes that knowledge and technology should be shared and used to better help people. Does not believe in following laws just for the sake of it. Will not betray friends or comrades. The motivation that drives him is wanting to create new gadgets and tools to help people. Magic and the mechanical tools that can be made are to be used to help those in need, and to increase the quality of life for people. A flaw that Gix has is how curious he is. His curiosity sometimes leads to him asking too many questions or being too pushy towards others. He might tire people out with his questions. Gix can be absent-minded at times, thinking of new inventions or gadgets he wants to create. Gix’ obsession with magic and machinery can sometimes be seen as strange by those around him.     What were the defining moments/events from their history? When Gix was 59 years old, he studied under a tinkerer for several years. This tinkerer, a female hill dwarf, taught him many things about how to weave magic and machinery together.     What do they most fear? Gix doesn’t really fear anything in particular. He is usually way too curious to know he should be afraid of something.     Do they have any secrets? Who have they told, if anyone? Gix is too interested in sharing his knowledge about magic and machines to be able to hold any secrets of importance.     Where are they from? Do they have relevant cultural associations/quirks? How patriotic and nationalistic are they? Gix is from the city of Regate, located on the Isles of Cassea. It is a medium-sized city, and the main export is metalwork, such as weapons and armour, but also more finely crafted things such as clockwork and music boxes. Regate is composed of many different races, but its’ gnome population is especially big, taking up about a quarter of the population. Other than its’ metalworking focus, it is also home to a noteworthy alchemist’s guild, due to its’ proximity to a big forest which contains many rare reagents and ingredients. Regate is known by some as the city of crafters. Regate also contains a big library, which focuses mainly on arcane and alchemical books. Gix is not particularly patriotic or nationalistic. He enjoyed living in the city but does not particularly miss not living there anymore. For Gix, what matters is having access to his tinkering tools, and any ingredients he might need for his experiments.     What was their childhood like? Gixs childhood was an easy one. He studied and learned his craft at the metalcrafters guild in Regate, and spent his free time studying magic, machinery, and herbalism. After moving out of his parents’ house at the tender age of 45, he rented a workshop from the local guild, where he also slept. Gix also often travelled around the isles of Cassea, collecting rare flowers, ore samples, or whatever else he could get his hands on to fuel his research.     Who are their parents & siblings, and husband/wife/significant other? Gix has a mother, a father, and an older sister. His father works for the metalcrafters’ guild in town, his mother works at the alchemists’ guild, and his sister is working as a researcher at a mages’ college in another town. Gix is not married and does not have any significant other. His mothers’ name is Eryst, his sister is named Risca, and his father is named Gundo.     Status of immediate family (including any children) and friends - alive/dead/missing All of Gixs’ immediate family is alive and accounted for.     What's their profession and hobbies? Gixs’ profession is that of a metalworker, although he is more specialized in finer metalcraft, such as making cogs, fine metal objects, or other things that do not require as much strength as your traditional blacksmith. He worked for the metalcrafters guild on Regate, which is where he learned how to be proficient with smithing tools. Gix has dabbled in many different hobbies, the foremost of which is his tinkering with gadgets and magic. It was due to this hobby that he got his job in the first place. He is proficient in Tinker’s Tools due to this hobby. Gix is always almost thinking about what kinds of gadgets would be of help, or what is needed for a particular new gadget or magic-infused item. Gix is also skilled with thieves’ tools due to his interest in mechanical contraptions such as locks and similar fine machinery. This has led him to be able to efficiently pick locks and disable traps. Gix has dabbled in potion making, although his skills are mostly theoretical. He is proficient in using an Herbalism Kit to craft simple potions and has some book knowledge about various herbs and their usage. He has, at times, tried combining his potions with his gadgets and devices, but has not managed to create anything practically usable yet.   Gix has studied magic and magic items for years and years and is now skilled enough to be apple to appraise and identify magic items, as well as detecting magic in an area.     Do they have a religious affiliation, and if so what is it and how strong?   Gix has not thought much about religion, he’s been too busy studying, working, and tinkering to concern himself with gods and deities. He has nothing against those who believe but believes that personal achievements and accomplishments are earned by working towards them, not praying for them. He would, however, be interested in performing experiments involving divine magic, but has so far not managed to convince any cleric he has met to take part in said experiments (The village cleric in his hometown scoffed at the idea of a, as Gix put it, “Grenade filled with divine power, like bottling holy fire from the gods!”, and no amount of convincing could change the clerics’ mind).     What are their major personal beliefs/ideologies? Gix believes that magic, technology and knowledge should be shared freely, to ease the lives of the less fortunate. He does not believe that magic books should be bound and collecting dust in forbidden sections of libraries, nor does he believe that only those well-off should be able to afford potions or other forms of magical healing.     Do they have favourite foods/drinks? Gix does not have any favourite food or drink.     Why are they here, specifically? What are they looking to get out of the adventure? Gix was washed up in Wittering after trying to navigate the Mare Infinitum with the help of a homemade device Gix calls a “Navigator”. The idea behind the navigator was to make a magical and technological device capable of navigating between safe harbours without the use of guiding trinkets or having been at a safe harbour before. Unfortunately, the device didn’t work, and Gix was lost at sea in his small boat for a week. After ending up in Wittering, Gix stayed at his guilds’ local branch, working for his lodgings. Gix saw no real reason to return to Regate, as his tinkering could be done anywhere. In Wittering, Gix has been looking into adventuring jobs, since they give him a way to test out his gadgets, as well as providing both gold and materials for perfecting his Navigator. His knowledge of how to identify magic items and how to detect magic has also made him valuable to certain merchants and collectors
