Cassandra is an Imaginative Jack who Possesses a Shard of the Sun

Journal Entry - Cass

It’s been six months since the accident. I have powers that I never imagined having. Light comes out of my palms. My eyes and a strand of my hair glow too when this happens. I can work with it now, a little. It’s like the heroes I read about in the books back in Habiru. But now I am sick more and more often. My stomach heaves, my head pounds, and I shiver endlessly. Even wearing the cloak Tidran got for me, I still ache. I don’t think heroes puke behind trees on a regular basis. Tidran can’t get over the guilt of letting this accident happen. I reassure him over and over again that I made the choice to save Habiru. To save him. But I’m resentful because of the accident. We had a home in Habiru. Veeran took care of us. But ever since the accident, people don’t look at me the same way. I feel rejected. When Tidran talked to Veeran about leaving, Veeran didn’t even meet my gaze. I thought I had gotten over being an orphan because the town took me in. But now the man who raised me can’t even look me in the eye.
I guess the only one I can really depend on is Tidran.
We have to leave anyway so I can find a doctor. We’ve traveled in a few caravans since the accident.

Tidran found a tinkerer in a small aldeia we found in a caravan trip. The tinkerer had a small device that didn’t seem to do anything until we got close. Some strange magic, perhaps? Tidran had a theory and had me stand outside while he bartered to take the “cool junk” off the tinkerer’s hands. Bringing it out we found that the device could be powered by the same crystal from the tower and all it needed was a small shard. Placing the device on his arm Tidran could now summon a sputtering glowing buckler. We now appear to both have interesting abilities. I told Tidran that we could be “The Heroes of Light” or something like that. He grunted in response. Tidran keeps the shield on at all times and now practices summoning it at will when we stop for the night and sit around the campfire. But between my glowing and his shield, most of the company stands away from us. Their eyes dart our direction but no one speaks to us.
To distract myself, I sketch endlessly and make up embarrassing stories in my head about the other members of the caravan. It seems to help my mood.

The merchant owner threw us out. He said our abilities were causing his customers to be uneasy in our presence. I told him that the strong smell of aneen dung coming off of his person did worse. This surprised me, because I usually only use insults like that in my head. Tidran did his best to persuade him after I botched the conversation but in the end he got only one piece of information. A man named Gwydion an inventor of some sort, resided near a newly formed settlement only a few days away. He may be the one to help me with my sickness. The founders of Beyonder's Blades seem to also be blessed with strange abilities. Perhaps we will find a home there? Maybe Tidran will find peace.
It is time to sleep. Tomorrow we walk to Beyonder’s Blades.
Tidran is still lecturing me about the aneen dung remark. Really, I thought it was quite clever. He hasn’t even read my stories about the caravan members yet.
