Helheim (The Hidden World)

Home of the Helhir.

Geography

The topography of Helheim is very harsh and unforgiving. Most of the planet is covered in rocky, barren hills and canyons. The desolation across the planet is broken up by small patches of thick wooded forests and steep mountains. Helheim is primarily terrestrial, with the oceans only accomadating for 35 percent of it's surface.

Ecosystem

Helheim does not have a large amount of life forms and habitable ecosystems like the other planets in Heimar. The few species that do exist tend to be irradic and unpredictable in their movements and behaviour. Most creaures on Helheim have adapted to the planets long nights and dismal days, using the lack of light to their advantage in stalking prey.

Localized Phenomena

The Dark Worldsoul infects all of Helheim with it's maddening power.

Climate

Helheim's weather remains fairly static throught the year, with very little precipitation. Windstorms often blow across the craggy surface bringing violent dust storms with them.

History

Helheim was in a sorry state long before the Aesir landed on it's surface. It's only intelligent life forms were the Munin, and their scattered thoughts and forgetfull minds did not show much promise in the ways of progress. It is a mystery whether this is how Helheim has always been, or if some disaster befell the planet in it's origins. Whatver the case may be, the Aesir were successful in their mission to find a Worldsoul, and for once, they wouldn't have to fight for it.   However a connection to the Dark Worldsoul came at such a high price, not even the Aesir were willing to fully embrace it. They determined the best use of this desolate planet would be to construct a massive prison complex. That way, they could keep all their prisoners of war and criminals in a central place, and even those that manage to escape, would be forced to survive on their own within the cruel wilds of Helheim, if they didn't go insane first. It wasn't long before the Aesir also began sending their own citizens they deemed to be "undesirables" in the utopia they pursued on Asgard to live on Helheim. Out of sight, and out of mind. Helheim quickly became a slum district, that pulled in impoverished from all over the nine worlds.   However, during the later years of Odin's reign, his daughter Hel developed a sense of compassion for these people and was given authority as magistrate over all Helheim by her father. For this suprising feat, she was renamed from Allfather to Altruis, which means advocate. Hel did all she could to improve the quality of life, for both prisoner and free, on Helheim but was consistently overruled by her father and his council. This greatly damaged their relationship, and cultivated a bitterness on Helheim that would eventually lead to their rebellion during Ragnorok. Although Hel never returned to Helheim after Ragnorok, she had left her daughter by the same name behind to rule in her stead. Hel Altruis II grew to be one of the most powerful Worldsoul users in history, and uses this power to remain immortal ruler over all Helhir. She has the same heart for her people as her Mother, and under her guidance the Helhir have grown from a slummy penal colony into a thriving and proud people that rivals even the Old Aesir in strength.
