What are the Fates Myth in The New Realm | World Anvil

What are the Fates

The Fates are the spinners of life, one's existence, and one's death.

  A

t the beginning of time, there was an empty universe. There were no stars or planets and no species of any kind. Time was sporadic and leaped from one point to another, as there was nothing to anchor it in place. Through these jumps through time, a ball of energy, tinier than an atom, formed. This ball of energy gently rolled and turned as it leaped from one point to another, gradually becoming increasingly denser. This little particle weighed heavily. Heavier than anything the universe had experienced. In one chaotic jump, the universe heaved and jolted and as a result; the particle broke into three.

The three particles fought to become one. But because of the natural chaos of the universe and the sporadic influence of time, the particles wove together instead and resembled a root of a tree. The particles' roots endured the universe's chaos and time leaps for an extended period. As a result, the roots became gnarled, scarred by the surrounding chaos.

Time's energy made the roots strong, and they transformed into a staff that thrashed chaotically. As time continued to jump and the universe wreathed in its torment, the gnarled and scarred staff grew stronger into a mast.

The energy particles that were once too weak to resist the chaos anchored time and, for the very first time, the universe felt somewhat structured. Still too weak to provide balance, the mast continued to weave, flay, and warp until it was strong enough to resemble a tree trunk.

This tree was far too young and frail to produce life, but it provided some structure and attracted the elements of the universe. First, the trunk absorbed the carbon. Then hydrogen mixed with the oxygen. Then the trunk absorbed the nitrogen and slowly the trunk became fruitful. For the very first time, the particles became individual elements entwined within themselves.

Through the energy of time and the elements of the universe, they began to grow and nurture each other. Each of them was different, but each depended on the other for survival.

One particle was strong enough to produce life. The other nurtured life. Then the last ended life. Over the vastness of time and space, the trunk grew into a sturdy tree, patiently nurturing existence within the cycle of time. Through the elements of the universe, the tree of life became known as The Fates. The ones that handled the existence of life.

Although the tree focused its energy on building and nurturing life, the universe subjected it to chaos. As the tree grew, the chaos became structured. Soon, the structured chaos evolved into the 14 energies of chaos that became the curse and gift of all species. There were 7 negative energies that created chaos in the worlds that formed: envy, gluttony, greed or avarice, lust, pride, sloth, and wrath. Virtues countered the negative energies: kindness, temperance, charity, chastity, humility, diligence, and patience. Each of these energies cultivated their own subform of chaos in the worlds and as the universe's species developed, they were governed by them. The balance of energy allowed the species in new worlds to have some free will in how they evolved. Their choices could lead to success or failure; life or death; love or hate; power or peace.

As time evolved, the different species created deities that represented the three energy particles of life. Some called them the three sisters, others called them God and viewed them as one. Whatever they were called, one thing was certain and absolute: The Fates were real and the chaos around them created history in a now stable timeline.

It is interesting how you build from the 3 particles out to the different entities and energies. This is a powerful foundation for your world.

Thank you! It is the base of the story. My main character and his associates will be faced with choices. I am also thinking I might write the story from the perspective of The Fates. I am still sorting that out.
