Western Magic
Modern Western magic can be divided into 8 branches: charm, transformation, conjuration, vanishment, spatial, healing, potion, and dark magic.[a]

Charm
A charm is a spell that changes that property or function of an object. These objects are often labelled enchanted if the effect of the spell is deemed positive, bewitched if negative, or charmed for other cases. A subclass of charms called enchantments comprise those spells which enhances the function of an object or bestow upon it additional positive attributes.
Examples of charms include:
- Shield Charm (Scutum, var. Scutum summa, Scutum aegis)
- Stunning Charm (Stupefacio)
- Attracting Charm (Adtraho)
- Repelling Charm (Repello)
- Repairing Charm (Reparo)
- Amplification Charm (Amplifico)
- Igniting Charm (Incendare)
- Acceleration Charm (Accelerat)
- Retarding Charm (Retarda)
- Protective Enchantment (Protego) - bestows a variant of the Shield Charm on an object and the charm will activate when object or its possessor is in danger
Transformation
As the name implies, this branch of magic revolves around changing the appearance of an object. There are three main types of transformation:
- animate to animate: the individual retains the original consciousness and intelligence throughout the transformation.
- animate to inanimate: the individual retains the orginal consciousness and intelligence throughout the transformation; however, they are unable to act.
- inanimate to inanimate: the original object takes on the physical properties and function of the new object (e.g., a pen transformed into a knife can cut).
Each transformation requires a specific spell comprising of the keyword Commuti and the Latin word for the animal or object to transform into, except for human to human transformation. The Human-Human Transformation Spell only require a specific wand movement and doesn't have an incantation, and due to the lack of an incantation, it is very challenging to learn. Transformation spells can be stacked upon, and the counterspell Reverti will transform the object back to its original form.
Animal Transformation
A subset of witches and wizards skilled at transformation magic are able to shape-shift themselves into animals (non-magical) at will, that is without wand movement or incantation. Typically, witches and wizards cannot transform their full body then be able to change back because they need wands and/or incancation to cast magic.
Conjuration
The act of conjuration is to produce something from nothing, or at least, that is what it looks like on the surface. In actuality, nothing can truly be conjured from thin air, and the starting component must come from somewhere. In conjuring something like fire or lightning, because the product is made entirely of "energized" air, the starting component is the air around the caster. For something like water or mist, the spell uses water vapors in the air or in the surrounding environment; the more water available, the better.
The set of magical laws which detail the limits of conjuration are known as Makov's Laws of Transfiguration:
- Something cannot come from nothing.
- Life cannot come from nonlife.
Examples of conjuring spells include:
- Vine Conjuration Spell (Ligare)
- Rope Conjuration Spell (Impedio)
- Chair Conjuration Spell
- Table Conjuration Spell
- Fire Conjuration Spell (Flammo)
- Lightning Conjuration Spell (Fulmino)
- Water Conjuration Spell (Aquaflumens)
- Rock Conjuration Spell
Vanishment
Vanishment is the opposite of conjuration and the purpose is to make things disappear whether they were magically conjured or not. There is only a single spell for vanishment, and often, it is done without the incantation. Vanishment of living organism is impossible.
Spatial Magic
Spatial magic is any magic that involves the transportation of objects across spacetime within an instant.
- Teleportation Spell (incantationless)
- Animal conjuration spells - people often mistake that animals are conjured from thin air, but they are actually summoned from another location.
- People summon spells - there are plethora of these
Healing
In essence, healing magic is a type of magic that transfer one's magical energy to another person to augment their healing capabilities. The magical energy can be guided through a person's body to achieve different forms of healing through spells.
- Wound Healing Spell Hemostasis Spell
- Bone Mending Spell
- Pain Reducing Spell (Dolor evanesco)
Potion
Unlike other forms of Western magic that relies heavily on the caster's magical prowess and imagination, potion-making is more of a science. Regardless of how weak a magician is, if they follow a potion recipe exactly, then they will be able to create the potion. The potency of a potion relies on the ingredients and techniques used to brew the potion, and magical energy is only needed to catalyze the reaction.
Examples of potions include:
- Love Potion (Amaductio)
- Truth Serum (Veritasium)
- Recovery Potion
Dark Magic
Dark magic encompasses any spell that is used with the intent of subjugating or harming the victim. Dark magic spells can be subclassified into three groups: jinxes, hexes, and curses, with each group being more powerful and dangerous than the previous. In addition, users of dark magic can be corrupted (mentally changed) through recurring use; thus, most dark magic is illegal despite the knowledge being widespread.
While dark magic is dangerous for both the victims and the casters, it is important to note that not everyone is capable of using dark magic. Dark magic is more temperamental than other types of magic and relies heavily on the caster's "negative" emotion to properly execute the spell. For example, when Alicia first fought against Dan, she tried to use the Piercing Curse but because she didn't have the necessary intent to kill, the spell was nothing more than a flash of light that was swatted away by Dan.
Examples of hexes:
- Full Body Bind Hex
Examples of curses:
- Imperium Curse (Imperio)
- Torture Curse
- Piercing Curse (Configo)
- Petrification Curse
- Explosion Curse (Eruptum)
- Asphyxiation Curse
Other:
- Necromancy (incomplete resurrection of the dead, more than zombie but less than living)
