Asími (aˈsi.mi)

"For all intents and purposes, you could consider Asími a part of the Malikate of Saba, and Kyrillos as a Muhafazah."

Asími is the largest settlement on the island of Kyrillos, located on the southern coast at the the mouth of the Asiménio Potámi. It is the major port on the island because the river connects the city to the silver mines of Kyrillos's interior. The area around the city is notoriously swampy and difficult to traverse, and most traffic in and out of Asími is by water.

Before the discovery of silver, Asími was a small and insignificant village. A little over four centuries ago, the silver deposits in the Téleia Óri led to a great expansion of the village into a major shipping center. The sudden influx of wealth to the previously poor community also attracted trouble. The Lakonía Phylí, with the support of the Malikate of Saba, invaded Kyrillos and enslaved the Télma Phylí who had previously controlled the island.

Demographics

The city is populated primarily by members of two Kaphtori phylai, the Lakonía Phylí and the Télma Phylí, with the latter making up nearly seventy percent of the population. There are very few residents who are not from these groups, and those are mostly Telmuns with ties to the Malikate of Saba. There are no non-human residents, but ships from all over the Southeastern Region are frequently in the harbor, and the Asími Agora is frequented by visitors of all species and cultures.

Government

Asími is managed as a city-state whose territory extends across the entire island of Kyrillos. Each of the prominent families in the Lakonía Phylí have a voting representative in the Synkletos, a legislative body that is responsible for making the laws. The Synkletos then appoints a Tyrant who is charged with enforcing the laws and operates with almost unlimited power. A Tyrant can be replaced by the Synkletos, but there is no other check on their activities. The current Tyrant of Asími is named Damianos Lakonios.

Districts

The city is built around the Asími Agora, an open marketplace that also serves as the primary public gathering place. The Tyrant's palace is built to overlook the Agora, directly opposite the Synkleterion where the Synkletos meets. The homes of the rich and powerful of Asími are built close to the Agora, and it is the most beautiful part of the city. It is in this district that the high class inn named the Argyrós Dafní is located, with a ring of silver laurel leaves on their sign.

Moving away from the Agora, one finds the river district and the harbor, where the silver mined inland meets the merchants who come from across the region. This region is filled with taverns and warehouses, and borders on the Telmatíska, an area where the oppressed and enslaved people of the Télma Phylí reside. One of the taverns here is the Oinopótis, which was where the Télma rebellion of thirty years ago was planned, and some claim that the blood still stains the floorboards.
