The Black Oubliette

Please, please, please! Not the Oubliette, please! We'll die there! We can make it up to him, please!
— Overheard in the streets of Verakhol
Dæmons are obsessed with order and hierarchy. A demon is born into their little caste and can never hope to leave it; the best they can hope for is favour from a Fire Prince or some other Noble Dæmon. The opposite is much more likely; if a demon commits a crime against one of the Princes, they will be taken to a prison like the Black Oubliette to be tried and executed (invariably).

A Forbidding Structure

The entire fortress is built of the same black brick that all major fortifications in the Tortuous Fire are made with. It rises and towers over the quarter of Verakhol where it is located, dwarfing even the nearby lavish gambling halls and other places owned by the Fire Prince of Thieves. Apparently, the idea, is that, despite the crime rampant in the city, the Prince wants to be clear that the role of justice overshadows everything. However, the practice of law-keeping in the City of Thieves leaves something to be desired.   The interior is just as terrifying as the exterior, according to the very few demons who patrol the place. The interior is mostly a maze of random-sized cells that no one has ever been able to break out of, with only the thinest of walkways and hallways connecting the cells together. Most are empty, it sounds like, but that's probably the best for the guards and for the prisoners...

A Beacon of Justice

Well, not really. The proverb "no honour among thieves" is very true in the city, and the supposed "traitors" hauled off to the Oubliette tend to be those who get caught robbing the rich, in contrast to the sheer number of brigands and ruffians the city hosts. However, the Noble Dæmons seem to see no problem with this, so the city continues its current brand of "justice."

My mate got nabbed for improper robbery the other day, and I just saw them string 'em up from the battlements of the prison. Not 'er fault that the Noble was wearin' a disguise to look like a commoner. Honest mistake, that.
