Royal Botanical Society
When the cliffside stronghold of Vil'Saroth was reclaimed and construction began on the Great Glasshouse, the township established an organisation to oversee the botanical and horticultural work done within its walls. This organisation was the Royal Botanical Society, and it eventually spread to the farthest reaches of Isturoth. Now, it is one of the most prominent guilds in the mountain kingdom.
Public Agenda
The mandate of the Royal Botanical Society is separated into two objectives: to further the botanical scientific knowledge of the Isturian people, and to conserve the plantlife that is already under their control.
History
Vil'Saroth was originally commissioned and financed by a wealthy lord during the War of Ashes. After the conflict, the lord was deposed and the keep fell into disrepair. It was eventually reclaimed by the ruling authority of Kur'Taloth, who saw the value of the overgrown, untamed thicket. Environmental conditions were perfect, and the ones responsible for it's reformation into a military stronghold felt they could do something even better.
As they did not have the approval of Kur'Taloth's rulers, they build the Great Glasshouse and founded the organisation responsible for it's management. The leaders of the fledgeling kingdom were so impressed with their ambition and conviction that they wholeheartedly supported the new society and their endeavours within Vil'Saroth.
In the decades following their formation, the Royal Botanical Society has spread all across the kingdom of Isturoth, operating even across the border into Vašira. They have sought locations of particular interest, places where unique or significant vegetation is known to grow. Often, apothecary or herbalist shops will bear their seal, giving them an air of authenticity or authority.
Technological Level
The Royal Botanical Society is at the forefront of alchemical and horticultural sciences. The greatest minds and green thumbs come together in the Great Glasshouse to unravel the mysteries of the seed, stem and leaf.
Agriculture & Industry
The main source of livelihood for the society is through grants given to them by the ruling powers or nobility of Kur'Taloth. These grants are often given with the requisition of a specific project. In other words, those who give the grants are asking for something in particular from the scholars and growers.
In order for the society to pursue their own projects, they are known to sell their own produce and alchemical creations on the side, to generate some extra coin. Additionally, it takes a substantial amount of money to maintain the Glasshouse and the delicate ecosystems contained within.
The scientific knowledge learned from within is very valuable to the right buyers, often universities or libraries.
