Sucking Bog Lands in The Lost Archipelago | World Anvil

Sucking Bog Lands

The Sucking Boglands are located in the northwestern region of the Shyishian continent. They are home to many biting insects, fish, and amphibious creatures. The fog that surrounds the Boglands gives a feeling of a cold fever, where the traveler is icy to the touch but internally overheating, leaving many who are un-acclimated to the sensation uneasy. The Reptas River splits the Boglands and leads to Lake Sturn.

Flora and Fauna

Bloodweed
Bloodweed grows in abundance throughout the spongy soil of the Boglands, its red extract staining the ground in a mock massacre. It is used by the locals as an insect repellant, by rubbing the “blood” on their skin, the hungry insects attack the extract instead of the person.

Kakuma
Large frog-like creatures, Kakuma bury themselves in deep puddles, waiting for unsuspecting prey to pass. They will then strike out with their poison coated barbed tongues, once pierced the victim will suffer horrible pain, bleeding from every orifice until passing out. The Kakuma then will swallow the unconscious meal, and find a suitable place to digest.

Tungusta
These fish hunt the Reptas River and Lake Sturn, blending in with leafy foliage and striking at lightning speed. Their large lower teeth stab into flesh and the Tungusta begins to roll, tearing large chunks of flesh. It is not until adulthood that these fish become dangerous and many young fish can be purchased as oddity pets.

The People

Known as Crookers, these fearful but hardy folk call the Sucking Boglands lands home. They travel by stilt, testing the depth and solidity of the soil before stabbing down to continue their path. Their speech is dry, and nervous laughter is normal when conversing with outsiders. Crookers have a strange affinity to raising crows and have their own communication method with the birds, they even go as far as creating elaborate costumes to attract more crows. They live in raised homes, keeping most of the Bogland creatures at bay. As a funeral rite, they create a raft filled with mementos of the deceased and send it to the middle of Lake Sturn.
