Combe (COOM)
Nestled in a valley on the north slopes of Bree Hill, Combe is a somewhat dreary little town in the literal shadow if the hill. The local stereotype imagines the folk of Combe as a dour pessimistic people. However, the lower part of the valley is well-watered farmland and the upper slopes make good grazing. The people of Combe are rightly proud of their livestock.
Demographics
The village is mostly made up of the Big Folk with only a couple hobbit families mixed in.
Government
Combe sends it's eldest able-bodied citizen to represent it on the Bree Council.
Defences
Combe's valley is hard to reach, but it has no wall or other defense. The livestock on the upper slopes have to be watched carefully as they are tempting to predators in the sparsely populated Bree-land, and not only of the animal kind. Trolls have raided the herds of Combe in living memory and some claim to have seen goblins prowling the edge of the woods, but few take such things seriously. The folk of Combe tend to speak as if disaster is always imminent, and their neighbors have learned to take this with a grain of salt.
Industry & Trade
Combe is inhabited by successful farmers, growing crops on the well-watered lower slopes and grazing cattle and other livestock higher up.
Geography
Combe is set in a deep valley on the northern side of Bree Hill. Travel between Bree and Combe involves a long walk around the hill. Of old there was a stair cut into the upper slopes of Combe's valley allowing for a shortcut over the hill, but the storms of the Fell Winter largely collapsed The Stile of Combe, making it more treacherous than before.
Bree Hill overshadows the village much of the day, though the sun reaches the fields on the lower slopes where crops are planted. To the north just beyond the fields is the Chetwood. Mists frequently lie heavy on the valley, giving it a gloomy appearance.
