Sunthorn

Weapon (rapier), legendary (requires attunement by a Hinode heir who is in tune with nature)

Long ago an ancestor of the Hinode line won a favor from Oberon himself. This weapon is an expression of that favor. The hilt appears to be made of twisting, budding plants that blossom when wielded by its accepted master. The blade of the rapier is made from an amber-like material that is as hard as steel, with a petal-pink gem inlaid midway through its length.

You gain a +3 bonus to attack and damage rolls made with this magic weapon.

Dormant. The hilt is lifeless and the blade is dull, its gem core darkened after centuries of being stored away in a box without a proper master to serve. The sword cannot accept a master or be attuned to. In this state, Sunthorn weighs 10x its normal weight and attacks made with it have disadvantage.

Awakened. After being restored by Oberon’s magic, Sunthorn gains the following additional properties when wielded by them:

  • When you hit with an attack using Sunthorn, the attack does an extra 1d10 radiant damage.
  • When you are reduced to 0 hit points, you can choose to instead cast the spell Mislead and gain 1 hit point. This property can’t be used again until you finish a long rest.
  • Sunthorn can cast spells (save DC18) without requiring material components. It is able to cast the spells Hunter’s Mark and Ensnaring Strike three times per day, as well as the spell Wall of Light once per day.
  • As part of an attack action, Sunthorn can shift from a rapier to a dagger by firing part of its blade as an Arrow of Slaying, attuned to a target of the user’s choice. As a dagger, the flowers on the hilt wither away. It takes a week for Sunthorn to return to full strength, regrowing the blade and the flowers on its branches as a plant does.

Ascended. By utilizing the Mythil of Emeraude, the Regent of Koheno imbued Sunthorn with the following additional properties:

  • As an action, Sunthorn can transmute itself into a longbow. In this form, attacks deal an extra 2d10 radiant damage. If Sunthorn is shifted into a bow after using its Arrow of Slaying feature, it instead functions as a shortbow.
  • While in the shape of a bow, Sunthorn’s Wall of Light is inaccessible. Instead, it has the ability to track and blind an enemy. As an action, make a ranged attack. On a hit, the user knows the target’s exact location as long as they are on the same plane for one hour. Additionally, all creatures within 10 feet of the target must make a DC18 Con saving throw or be blinded for one minute. A creature can repeat the saving throw at the end of each of its turns, ending the effect on itself on a success.

Resplendent. In the process of slaying the Archdevil Geryon, Sunthorn blossomed in crimson flowers and gained the following additional properties:

  • Any piercing damage dealt by Sunthorn is instead converted to pure damage.
  • Sunthorn's radiant damage decreases the target's max HP. If this effect reduces a creature's hit point maximum to 0, the creature dies. This reduction to a creature's hit point maximum lasts until the creature finishes a long rest or until it is affected by a spell like greater restoration.

Sentience. The sword can communicate with its wielder by subtly buzzing, sending a sensation through the wielder's hand when it wants to communicate something it has sensed.
