Ice Station Episode 3

The hunt is not yet over

General Summary

Downtime (23/5/317AG)

After returning from Ice Station Zulu, Tyrfing and Zanderbey allowed Chip his mysterious escape and went in search of alcohol. They found enough to keep them occupied in Nabokon's Bear & Beehive Inn, and quickly made a small commotion - but nothing the bartender, an Awakened Bear named Arktos couldn't handle. Zanderbey had a quiet drink and struck up a conversation with a nearby woman while Tyrfing began seeing how many drinks the Stewards would pay for him before freezing his account. A pair of halflings joined in the revelry, and even Arktos joined in the fun. On the third drink, however, a classic mistake was made - Castrovelian elf-make
wine, coupled with the arrival of a trio of elvish women. He lost balance on the stool he was standing on and toppled to the ground, rolling to a stop in front of the trio with wine pouring out his mouth and nose. They stepped around him, not even deigning to acknowledge his presence and moved on. The pair decided to sober up before the end of the night, and then went to bed.

Episode 3 (24/5/317AG)

Early in the morning, Shadowfox alerted Zanderbey. A pair of cyborg bounty hunters were attempting to break into the room! Zanderbey snatched up his trusty beam spreadgun and opened fire on them (and missed), while in the next room Tyrfing was alerted moments before they entered and cut his assailants down. After they were dead, he
noticed Jurakesh - a huge vesk wielding a spear and shield easily slaughter another pair of killers. As Tyrfing rushed outside, to slaughter the two assaulting Zanderbey and Shadowfox, a sniper from the building across the street managed to slip a bullet past his armour. A few seconds more and the pair were dead. They regrouped with Jurakesh, and although their suspicions were shaky at first Jurakesh decided to hold judgement until he was more certain. Before they left, Shadowfox looted the bodies on Zanderbey's orders, finding a few credits and an ID card - evidence that these bounty hunters worked for NextStep.

They regrouped in the kitchen, and Zanderbey's idea to shut the metal protectors on the window worked - although Tyrfing beat him to it by throwing a bottle seconds before Zanderbey could push the button manually. They were safe, for now. Zanderbey withdrew the depleted plasma round from Tyrfing, and they retreated back to Jurakesh's small apartment where they discovered that all three had their accounts locked - and bounties posted. Jurakesh felt sure that Captain Del Agrae was corrupt, and there was only one person he could rely on: the Steward of Nabokon, Ted Goldworthy.

They travelled via Rails to his private home, but found it on lockdown with NextStep guards outside the building. Jurakesh dispatched them in a matter of seconds, and they simply knocked on the door. Ted was surprised to see them taking such a forward approach, but invited them in - he had suspected that Del Agrae had been making some shady dealings for a few months, but didn't have the time or ability to investigate further. Zanderbey attempted to message Bastion on Absalom Station, but only narrowly escaped detection by NextStep. Ted suggested they take a more simple approach - one without technology.

He set three tasks before them, which they would need to complete before being able to move against Captain Del Agrae:
  • His house had probably been infested with listening devices, but instead of spending what could be days searching for them all (and to miss even one would mean to risk catastrophic failure), Ted had discovered the location of the NextStep listening outpost. If they destroyed that, they would harm Del Agrae's intelligence operations and disable eyes and ears on them in one fell swoop.
  • The four (and a half, counting Shadowfox) of them could not hope to take on such a decorated war veteran. They would need the power of the Verces Law Enforcement, and together with them, perhaps they have the firepower to go head-to-head with their opponent.
  • Finally, the matter of their role as Stewards still remained. There was a crisis down by The Vator, one that a Steward needed to attend to. If they abandoned it, everything the Stewards stood for began to crumble.
With the tasks set before them, the four (and a half) set out towards Nabokon's police station to secure more military forces. Ted guided them along the Rails and along alleyways to the back of a bland steel door, where he let them in to see one of the most chaotic stations they had ever been to.
