Draconic

dra(h)-KON-ick

Draconic is the language of dragons, and according to them it is the oldest mortal tongue and that all other mortal languages descended from it. Other native speakers included members of draconic-related races, such as kobolds and dragonkin, and members of reptilian races such as lizardfolk and troglodytes.

Writing System

Lokharic, the script of Draconic, has the same number of characters for letters and numbers to that of Common. The written portion was likely created long after its spoken form was standardised, as dragons had little to no need to write.

Geographical Distribution

Often used on Triaxus. Draconic also maintains an unusual status as one of the 'magical' languages and a language of the Pact Worlds, making it popular with mystics and common traders alike.

Phonology

Words that modified other words are placed before or after the word they modified, with the most important modifier always placed before. Draconic speakers may place the word an additional time directly after the word, for additional emphasis.

Dialects

Slight variations in the dialect of Draconic were used among the different kinds of chromatic dragons, and were considered equivalent to regional accents. Metallic dragons on the other hand all had similar accents. Dragonborn and kobolds each have their own unique draconic dialects; Tymantheran and the Yipyak, respectively.

Morphology

Draconic words were emphasized on the first syllable, and speakers of Draconic expressed important ideas by stressing the beginnings and the ends of words. Dragons often used this when referring to themselves, or when they wanted to command, warn, threaten, or otherwise make their point clear.

Phonetics

Draconic is a language of hard consonants and sibilants that usually sounded like hissing when spoken, like sj, ss, and sv. It also included a sound similar to a creature clearing its throat, ach.
"Meddle not in the games of dragons, because they will find you quite crunchy once toasted."
Rudolph van Richten, professional monster hunter.
