Starting with
Adventure of Link, the
Zelda series began allowing the player to cast spells in game, which used up their Magic Power. This was only able to be replinished by finding bags or jars of
Magic Powder, resting drinking certain
Potions, or only in
AoL, leveling up. The variety of spells that could be cast has varied over the series, though the
Fire Rod and
Ice Rod have been near constant users of the resource. In some games, the players most powerful sword move, the
Spin Slash, also used Magic Power to strike a larger radius.
Magic Power has appeared to have left the series in recent years, last officially seen in
The Wind Waker. It may have existed in early development of
Twilight Princess, but seems to have been replaced with the expenditure of
Rupees to power the
Magic Armor. As seen in
Majora's Mask, Magic Power is usable by other species than just
Hylians, such as
Deku Shrubs, the
Gorons and
Zora.
For the purposes of
the Hylian Fantasy Magic Power, or MP, is a representative resource of ones natural energy and connection to the gods, or
Essence. The stronger ones Essence, the more available MP they have available to them. Being attuned to a specific deity allows for a more efficient use of spells connected to that deity.
Gaining & Increasing Magic Power
Prior to
Ocarina of Time, Magic Power was made available as soon as you gained an item or spell that required it. The Magic Meter in
Adventure of Link could be made to deplete slower by leveling up, or locating up to four Magic Jars hidden throughout the game. In
A Link to the Past, the Mad Batter character can curse the player to use their Magic at half the rate of normal, effectively doubling their Magic Meter.
With
OoT the player is required to seek out the
Great Fairy of Power, who bestows the ability. The Magic Meter can be doubled by visiting the Great Fairy of Wisdom. The same characters also grant and increase the players Magic Meter in
Majora's Mask, but only after locating each ones Stray Fairies, respectively. As well, the Chauteu Romani drink gifts the player with an infinite Magic Meter for the current Three-Day Cycle.
The player does not gain Magic Power in the
Wind Waker until meeting the Great Deku Tree and being gifted the Deku Leaf. Later, the player can rescue a Great Fairy, who doubles their Magic Meter.
In the
Hylian Fantasy characters may gain Magic Power in a variety of ways, whether through conditions of birth or from the gifting of such abilities from a sufficient source. Characters MP starts at 16 for Hylians, and can be doubled or increased in a variety of ways.
