Thozun Bittershield
This old, wrinkly, Dwarf wears a simple researcher's outfit, with several holes and burn marks visible on his brown robe. He has short, white hair, and a short beard (at least for a dwarf). His most notable aspect is that he always seems to have some sort of wound or disease on his skin, different everytime someone meets him. Beneath all these bizarre, ever-changing afflictions, one may be able to find his Black Kraken Arbiter's Mark on the tip of his pointer finger.
Thozun Bittershield is the current leader of the Krakonia National Institution of Health(KNIH) , and is therefore in charge of researching all sorts of potential advances in the large, diverse medical field. His priority is to discover ever-increasingly efficient, cheap alternatives to the current state of medicine, including finding cheaper alternatives to spell components, or non-magical alternatives to spell effects, or simply better spell effects. The point is, if it's a new way to heal a person's wounds, whether physical or mental, the KNIH is dedicated to following through on researching it.
Bittershield got his start late into The Unification Wars when he met Wirith Fenvaris , and the two of them apparently had a long, engaging chat about the current state of the medical field in Requerm . Apparently, in Bittershield's Plane of Origin, his old boss always ignored his crazy ideas, rejecting them as either heresay or nonsense, but Fenvaris actually took the time to deconstruct those ideas and discover the merit in them. The two of them quickly built up a partnership, with Bittershield coming up with outlandish ideas, and Fenvaris recreating those ideas and applying them on a large scale. By the time the war was over, the two of them had developed a level of respect as scholars for one another, leading to Fenvaris choosing Bittershield to be the lead researcher at the KNIH.
Bittershield has since developed a reputation as an eccentric with his head in the clouds, just the way the researchers at the KNIH prefer it. Turns out, it's real easy to convince a man to approve your project if that man wants to turn every impossible thing into a possible thing. The more insane the premise, the more likely Bittershield is to approve it. After all, the current state of the medical field is actually already in a pretty good spot, since magic can fix most people's health problems. The problem is simply that it isn't affordable, or takes too long, or requires an expert that may not always be available. By taking the field of medicine into one's own hands, one can reduce these trivialities.
This insanity is primarily the reason why Bittershield is always covered in some wound or illness. Who better to learn the intricacies and efficacies of any given treatment than a man who understands an affliction from the inside out? Yes, he indeed will voluntarily give himself diseases and injuries just so that he can see how to best cure it as quickly and efficiently as possible. If a given treatment turns out not to work, he has plenty of assistants and quick access to Krakonia National Hospital(KNH) to fix him right back up so he can start the process all over again.
