New Template: Creature of Darkness - +0/+1CR

The Creature of Darkness template is a template applied to creatures to represent the monsters of the Hylia plane of existence that only ever exist in response to a dark influence attempting to take over the world, which is weirdly cyclical in nature. This is usually in part due to an evil entity disrupting the natural order in some way, either through a ritual or by corrupting the divine powers that normally protect the world (i.e. the triforce). The result of this corruption is the existence of these creatures of darkness. They are not much different than a regular creature, and the template can be applied to just about anything else, but here’s mechanically how it works in Requerm

The CR is between +0 and +1 because some creature types are affected more than others when applying this template. An outsider, for example, barely gets anything from this template, whereas an ooze gets more BAB, HP, saves, etc.

Creatures of Darkness are outsiders in addition to their other creature types/subtypes. This increases their HD to d10 if it is less than d10, their BAB up to full progression if it’s less than full progression, and changes up to two of their saving throws to good saving throws if it’s less than two normally.

They now receive skill points equal to 6 + Int modifier (minimum 1) per Hit Die if this is more than the original number. The following also become class skills: Bluff, Craft, Knowledge (planes), Perception, Sense Motive, and Stealth. Due to their varied nature, they also receive 4 additional class skills determined by the creature’s theme.

Creatures of Darkness are always chaotic evil, no exceptions. They hardly have enough sentient thought to think for themselves most of the time, operating mostly on instinct, which is always driven by the evil influences that created them. Stronger creatures of darkness can think for themselves, sometimes demanding payment or opportunity for themselves, but even they are motivated purely by the evil desires of their masters, a relationship born of nothing more than a respect for power.

Because they are now outsiders, Creatures of Darkness gain the following traits:

  • Darkvision 60 feet.
  • Unlike most living creatures, an outsider does not have a dual nature—its soul and body form one unit. When an outsider is slain, no soul is set loose. Spells that restore souls to their bodies, such as raise dead, reincarnate, and resurrection, don’t work on an outsider. It takes a different magical effect, such as limited wish, wish, miracle, or true resurrection to restore it to life. An outsider with the native subtype can be raised, reincarnated, or resurrected just as other living creatures can be.
  • Proficient with all simple and martial weapons and any weapons mentioned in its entry.
  • Proficient with whatever type of armor (light, medium, or heavy) it is described as wearing, as well as all lighter types. Outsiders not indicated as wearing armor are not proficient with armor. Outsiders are proficient with shields if they are proficient with any form of armor.
  • Outsiders breathe, but do not need to eat or sleep (although they can do so if they wish). Native outsiders breathe, eat, and sleep.

On top of the abilities gained from being outsiders, Creatures of Darkness have the following additional traits/abilities:

Negative Energy Affinity: Despite being alive (unless their original creature type is undead), Creatures of Darkness react to positive and negative energy as if they were undead—positive energy harms them, while negative energy heals them.

Profane Existence: Creatures of Darkness double any profane bonuses they receive, and cannot receive sacred bonuses. They also halve the damage dealt to them by profane bonuses and double the damage dealt to them by sacred bonuses. The same can be said for other stats boosted by profane/sacred bonuses, such as spell DC.

Succumb to Darkness: When a Creature of Darkness is slain, its body disappears into the void, leaving behind nothing but certain remains defined in their stat block.

Creatures of Darkness also can be subject to numerous spells/abilities that affect specifically this template, and often have such abilities themselves.
