Jarl
Jarl is a noble title used in the High Kingdom of Fjallheima, denoting the hereditary or appointed rulers of the kingdom’s numerous jarldoms, or regional clan-lands. Traditionally ranking below the High King and the High Jarls, a jarl serves as both the chief administrator and military leader within their domain. Jarls preside over local Things (assemblies), judge disputes, collect tribute, and lead their household warriors in times of conflict. The office of jarl is central to Fjallheima’s decentralized, clan-based society, blending responsibilities of governance, law, and defense. While the title is most commonly associated with powerful families and warrior lineages, jarls are also expected to uphold the kingdom’s customs of hospitality, honor, and loyalty to the High King.
