Housekarl
Housekarl is a term used in the High Kingdom of Fjallheima to denote a class of professional warriors and retainers who serve directly under the banners of a jarl, high jarl, or the High King. Traditionally drawn from the ranks of freeborn men who have proven their loyalty and martial skill, housekarls function both as elite bodyguards and as enforcers of law and order within their lord’s domain. Their responsibilities include guarding noble households, executing the judgments of the Thing (assembly), and leading troops in battle or on raids. Distinguished from levied freemen (karls) by their full-time service and elevated status, housekarls are often rewarded with land, gifts, or privileged positions within the hall. The institution of the housekarl is central to Fjallheima’s social and military hierarchy, reflecting the kingdom’s emphasis on personal loyalty, martial prowess, and the maintenance of order.
