Synchronic Engines
Ilgor didn't have much choice in the matter, they needed to keep moving. This sandstorm be damned, the Shadow chasing them was the problem. Caleb's old Skimmer that they had "rescued" from that scrap heap was their only way out of the situation with any ease. Had she'd known that the engine was built around around siphoning magic for fuel, she wouldn't have been suppressing her own power like she'd been taught by The Sage of Huron: Emily Von Eule. The moment Caleb mentioned that they were heading into a dead field, so to speak, in the shadow of the Easifatan Almatariq, she took all the locks off her power. They shot off like being fired from a gun, their engine on the back of the skimmer glowing a bright cherry red from the magic it happily ate. Well, hot enough for Caleb to shout and begin carving in a few extra runes for heat sinks before the blocks melted. The dunes flying past them as they raced toward the southern tip of the desert to rendezvous with the Galcian fleet stationed off the southern coast.
Utility
Everything from travel to manufacturing. If something needs power or a tool built, an engine can be used. In a manufacturing setting they are used from rotary machines, such as drills, wheels, and gear operations. More fine work is used with much more precise machinery still supplied with power from these engines. Ranging from vehicles to cranes to heavy earth moving equipment, these Synchonic Engines are the heart of the operations. Mundane variants are used in more standard equipment, where a regular steam engine is preferred are in things like general power generation and providing rotational energy to many pieces of equipment all attached to the same tool.
Though, depending on which engine type is being asked, they are specialized in different things.
- The Cloquet Engine: tend to be rugged, thick plated monsters capable of taking sustained abuse and damage before becoming inoperable. Capable of outputting an unfathomable amount of torque and horsepower pound for pound of steam used. They are usually seen in large shipping vessels and military use, often seen as the source of power in fortifications defenses such as anti-air and artillery applications.
- The Khamere Engine: A very middle ground piece of machinery that is favored in factory settings for it's ease of repair and easy to understand spell structures. Khamere spent the better part of a decade reasoning out the easiest way to make these engines as accessable as possible. As such nearly every factory under the sun has the engines in their employ. Khamere was the one to make the spell structure to allow siphoning of ambient energy that quickly spread to the other engines to a degree. Though the Forgemaster's own engines rarely use the effect due to the high cost nature of their spell constructs.
- Zybtine Engine: Typically sleek and nimble, built solely for outputting massive amounts of power with the smallest amount of weight possible. These are used on the various vehicles being built for the fledgling personal vehicle market, though few early adopters for land based travel are currently present. Where this engine shines is in the Skyships of the Zybtine desert and the Sandskimmers that dart across the dunes with ease. They are purpose built to be engines for maneuverability and lightweight applications. These engines tend to rely on siphoning ambient energy from their surroundings for their fuel, ironically making the air around them icy as the fire burns in it's underbelly.
Access & Availability
Depending on situation, the average person interacts with these machines regularly, though only large companies, entrepreneurs, inventors and the wealthy actually own one.
Complexity
Requiring multiple disciplines to understand in their fullest extent, they remain an arcane mystery for the majority of people.
Discovery
This type of steam engine was discovered around the same time by three separate entities from across the continent. Those three being The Forgehouse lead by the The Forgemaster, You Khamere. Cloquet and Sons discovered by the Prime Architect Cloquet Morrisette, and finally by the Dioecies of the Cult of Bhal inside the Zybtine Caliphate. The Forgehouse having become the premier research institution of the Kingdom of Galus in all things mechanical and applied magical sciences. Cloquet and Sons is the single largest defense firm responsible for manufacturing much of the States of Huron's military needs. The Dioecies had their own reasons for developing the engine, much of which involved finding propulsion methods for skyships and sandskimmers.
Though, many mundane steam engines existed by this time, the incorporation of the concepts learned from Alchemical Henna, brought these engines into a new age. Capable of withstanding much higher pressures, much hotter temperatures with additional durability. Some being able to run without fuel so long as the ambient magical energy is high enough, depending on spell construction for each component, they range from monstruous behemoths to sleek and nimble things.
