The Shallows are a series of islands east of the Antaauustret mainland that are loosely connected by shallow waters. Many ships have run aground not knowing the few deep-water shipping lanes of the area. However the ships can be easily freed when the tides turn at Shipwreck Straights push back water into the shallows. Many of the lesser houses were established by families of the Shallows. These "lesser" houses often took the name of their house from the waters surrounding their islands. The lesser houses were systematically conquered by the first King of the Commonwealth between 117-132 BEM.
Port Of Mirkwood

The Port of Mirkwood is the largest port in the Shallows. Its name not only comes from the many mangrove trees that fill the surrounding region that darken its waters but the waters have also darkened from the many corpses that have filled the waters over the centuries. The armies and garrisons of the Commonwealth have used the mangrove forests to ambush invading armies and pirates.
Trenchwood Port

Trenchwood is notorious for the dark shallow waters that surround the area. It has become a graveyard for ships with unexperienced captains. Before the High Houses conquered the Shallows, the lords of Trenchwood prayed upon the merchant ships that passed through.
811 EM - 133 EM
For Hundreds of years the Lords of the Shallows have fought over the islands of The Shallows. Control of the islands and waterways were constantly changing hands. The Lords of the Shallows would constantly raid the mainland and flee to the Shallows when the Houses of the mainland would raise their levies.
133 EM - 117 EM
Sometime around 132 EM, word began to spread that the Houses of the mainland were gathering to unite after hundreds of years. Many of the Lords of the Shallows paid any attention to the rumors as many have tried to unite the free lords to little success. On the 9th Sol of Araḫ Simanu, 128 EM, the Port of Mirkwood awoke to the sounds of the ports bells ringing. United under one banner, the Free Houses of the mainland began their conquest of the Shallows.
