The Abyss
There are multitudinous layers of the Abyss, perhaps even an infinite number. No-one has ever counted them all and it's doubtful that any of the natives, let alone any bean counter, has ever considered the effort worth the time and danger. Plain and simple no one's ever done so because each layer is so horribly grotesque and dangerous that a berk would have to be barmy to even want to see any of them. Even fewer sods have the power to visit and survive the trip. For one thing almost every layer of the abyss is completely inhospitable to mortal life, planar or prime. For another this plane is home to the tanar'i the most commonplace race of demons, and one side of the blood war that wages between demons and devils. Watch out for those tanar'i bashers, one look and they'll put a berk in the dead book. Their reason? As often as not just because they can. Don't expect any better reason from beings of abyssal chaos. They're devoted to seizing everything they can for themselves and killing everyone else. To their minds that's the only way to power and power is the only goal of their existence.
Petitioners of this plane are the spirits of the chaotic-evil. Most take the form of manes, the very lowest of the tanar'i, though a few exceptionally powerful ones may begin their abyssal ascension as something more powerful. Manes are killed repeatedly in their droves, mostly because more powerful demons vent their bloodlust on the sods. But here's the real chant: Petitioners of this plane want to be tanar'i even if all they are is a lousy mane. Those who survive long enough may be transformed into more powerful forms should a master find the need for such a servant. Raw power is all these sods care about, and the Abyss is the place to get it.
