The Wreck of the Shuguang Settlement in The Great Dust Bowl | World Anvil

The Wreck of the Shuguang

Launched from Chinatown to push the bounds of the Empire’s reach, the Shuguang experienced a complication and crash landed back towards Earth before escaping the atmosphere. Landing in the Great Dust Bowl, many vital flight systems were damaged beyond repair. Although this stranded the men and women aboard, the internal workings of the ship were largely intact.

Built to establish a small permanent scientific station in low orbit, the people on board were well equipped to handle even this harsh climate. With enough resources and supplies to last decades, their leader decided it was more important to stay put and try to solve the regional anomaly that was sure to affect the rest of the country if it continued to be left unchecked. Making the best of their situation, the rest of the crew fell in line dutifully.

Told the shuttle’s rough translation, locals have taken to calling the settlement “Dawnbreak” instead of trying to pronounce its actual name. The Shi embraced this designation in good spirits, finding the irony amusing. They offer asylum and aid to outsiders that they encounter, often asking only for knowledge on the area in return. Though strictly pacifist, high tech deterrents and security have been deployed to keep the peace.

Main Sources of Sustenance

Aeroponics: Having brought seeds with them from San Fransisco, the Shi have a diverse group of vegetables and fruits in their diet thanks to a little trick. By using a closed system and a moisture collector, plants can be grown without any soil or regular rainfall. A fine mist keeps the roots hydrated while artificial means protects and feeds them nutrients.

Aquaponics: Another staple in their diet is fish and eel that were brought as eggs suspended in animation. Tanks are filled with water pumped up from a nearby well and purified through a series of high temperatures and fine filters. Nitrates are collected from their waste to help grow plants in the aeroponics system, while some of the vegetation that results are in turn fed to the marine animals in an efficient symbiosis.
