New Kenton in The Great Dust Bowl | World Anvil

New Kenton

Pre-war Kenton Oklahoma during early July 2278..

Just south of the Black Mesa lies a road commonly used by the Corvega City Slavers when they bring a large annual haul from Oklahoma into their territory to the north. Mostly comprised of criminals or society's unwanted, these slaves are often offered up by settlements that wish to avoid confrontation with the well-armed horde of mutants as they make their rounds. Some are actually captured by hand, however it is exclusively under circumstances where they possess a massive advantage or have their unfortunate prey cornered with no way to fight back. It's true they possess an impressive bark, but most would be shocked to find out how little bite follows an actual challenge.

That was at least until a hot summer night in July during the year 2278, when a group of abolitionists taking cover on the Black Mesa opened fire on the returning slaver convoy. They had also set up a number of traps to mire the vehicles or damage their tires, leaving the confused and inebriated mutants to flounder in the face of the ambush. This tactic was quite effective, and soon scores of bodies were laying twisted across the sands. Suddenly unsupervised and caught in the crossfire, chain gangs of prisoners made a mad dash to escape. Unfortunately the tide would turn however, with the slavers using their sheer numbers to assault the fortified positions and gain the upper hand. Once the bloodshed was finally over, they recaptured anyone they could find and limped off back towards Corvega City, taking nearly two thirds of their original numbers in casualties.

A few people managed to hide however, and others that were left for dead would slowly begin to recover as the dawn cast its orange hues across the battlefield. Left in the wake of this tragedy, many would choose to wander off into the Great Dust Bowl in search of their old life or perhaps a new one before they noticed the miracle taking place all around them. Rain had fallen here recently, and the composition of the earth was much closer to soil than sand like in the rest of the region. Not only does this make it unsuitable for the nasty critters that usually burrow in the soft arid desert, plant life has returned to fill the void in the ecosystem as evident by a myriad of translucent stalks that creep up all around them.

OOC Notes

This will be a 'persistent world' where multiple groups of players can work together by gathering the necessities to build a fledgling settlement. Player groups that are not actively in a session will be considered to be filling the various roles NPCs generally would in this scenario, including building, farming, or scavenging the local area. A large team-based experience, this will also allow more flexibility with scheduling and running the game when someone is absent.

Planning to run this between the Molly Pitcher taproom events and the Gather Your Party Games and Hobbies store, more details on the Discord, (reach out to Zyxthylum for the local 717 role/Facebook invitation)!

You do not need anything to join besides a Fallout interest.

I have a physical copy/pdfs of all the supplements we will be using and will be limiting homebrew content based on a case by case basis to maintain balance. I will also provide dice and character sheets. If you would like to bring a handy tool in which to make the process much easier, a laptop or fancy tablet device that allows you to connect to World Anvil will make your life easier but it is not required. I have run several learn-to-play one-shots, (Vault 139), and can in the future for anyone completely new to the system, but as long as you come with a willingness to learn I can work with any experience level.
