Shields
"Shield" is the colloquial term used for a large variety of different methods to protect an object or person from external threats without the use of dense materials such metal, stone or concrete.
Utility
Shields are used primarily in a defensive or containment role, being used to prevent objects of certain natures to pass through an area. Shields have also been used in offensive roles either by a manipulation of the properties of the shield or using it to increase the physical integrity of an object for collision with another.

Access & Availability
Widely available but can be prohibitively expensive depending on shielding method, power infrastructure, and the importance of theobject being shielded. Most militaries utilize shields on any ship larger than a frigate.
Complexity
Shields can range from relatively simple to ludicrously complex in their make up. Very basic shielding technology is available to those in upper Tech Level 3, though more for utility roles such as radiation containment or livestock boundaries.
Discovery
Shields have been discovered on several different occasions by different species under different circumstances. Humans discovered shield technology shortly after they began to mass colonize orbital stations in order to protect inhabitants from harmful cosmic and solar radiation.
