Naeia Character in The Fourth Age of Tel | World Anvil

Naeia

Goddess of Oceans and Rivers

I sing of Naeia, blessed goddess of the deep! Hail to the Sea-Mother, from whose womb springs forth the waters of life and the fruits of the sea! Be kind to us, O Naeia, and watch over those who tread your waters with their vessels! Protect the souls of the unfortunates who drown in your seas by sending your blue-skinned dolphins to guide them to afterlife in Ourana!
— "Hymn to Naeia"

Goddess of the Sea within the pantheon of Ouranic Gods, Naeia ensures that her faithful recieves the ocean's bounty. For thalassocratic cultures, like the Rexans or Eknoi, Naeia occupies a position of great respect and devotion. Within the Ouranic Church, her cult is known as the Order of the Sea-Mother (Aeriscan: Ordina Matri Mari).

Divine Domains

Within the Ouranic pantheon, Naeia has been given dominion over oceans and rivers, as well as the flora, fauna, and minerals found within them. Sailors, fishermen, and others whose livelihood depends on the sea form the majority of her devotees, as they supplicate before her with offerings in exchange for bountiful catches and calm waters.

Divine Symbols & Sigils

Symbols that are commonly associated with the worship of Naeia are dolphins, fish, and the trident.

Divine Goals & Aspirations

Mercurial, like the flowing waters she holds dominion over, Naeia personifies the dual nature of the sea: a source of great beauty and bounty, and a cold, terrifying abyss that is full of danger. As such, mariners offer sacrifice to her, so that she might look kindly upon them. Naeia is particularly concerned with the preservation of aquatic life from those who would over-zealously exploit the bounty of the ocean. In this goal, she often finds common cause with her cousin Bira, and the two deities are believed to have a cordial relationship.

Since the Second Age of Tel, Naeia has been involved in a power struggle with Vargus, the mad Nar God of Floods and Maelstroms for dominance over the Central Sea. Mystics believe that the Rexan-Nar War of 950 AR was, in fact, a war between the two deities with their respective worshippers serving as proxies in their conflict.
