Eknopolis Settlement in The Fourth Age of Tel | World Anvil

Eknopolis

Second only to Shim Lim Ga in terms of population, Eknopolis is the center of what remains of Ionese civilization. Due to its size and its position as both a port on the Central Sea and as the western terminus of the Dragon Silk Road, Eknopolis is the largest and wealthiest city in western Tel. Formerly a secondary capital of the Rexan Empire, it was spared from destruction during the events of the Blackest Day due to the massive walls and other defenses that surround the city.

A sprawling metropolis, the 'Great City' is composed of several districts. The largest district, by far, is Eknopolis Major, and it makes up the majority of western Eknopolis. It is comprised of several neighborhoods of note. The city's religious life is centered in the Forum of Naeia, which also contains the Great Amphitheatre of Eknopolis and the city's marketplace, Katadelian Square. Adjacent to the Forum's eastern side is the Acropolita, a large citadel containing the Imperial Palace and the Senate chambers. The southeastern quarter of the city is comprised of two major districts, the slums of Nestoria Harbor and the foreigners' district of Xenikos.

Demographics

As a major financial and trade hub, the streets of Eknopolis are filled with people who hail from almost every known civilization in Tel. However, the vast majority of residents are of the Eknoi or Rexan ethnicities.

Defences

As the undead hordes of the Lich-Emperor Nefastius marched towards Eknopolis, fifty priests of the Ouranic Church volunteered to sacrifice themselves in a ritual to establish a magical ward around the city. Through use of powerful theurgia, the priests walked into the stone of the city walls and allowed themselves to be interred within. The places in which the priests passed into the stone walls now serve as sites of pilgrimage for the Ouranic faithful.
