Mage Profession in The Flying Flux | World Anvil

Mage

Direct your thoughts or die trying.

Only the bravest intellects of the Flying Flux adopt this highly esteemed occupation. Mages (unlike magicians) study the laws which make up Flux's reality (especially the Law of Perception), making this job more dangerous than any other (with the exception of gladiators). If a mage survives one of their own discoveries, they typically retire and live off the patent.

Career

Qualifications

Anyone can be a mage, but it would be unwise to become one unless your intellect is far above average. There have, of course, been many foolish mages, but most of them die off quickly.

Career Progression

This profession is incredibly rare, since the more reserved geniuses will pursue Philosophy. However, the title of "mage" preceded by "living" is extremely impressive, and those who adopt it are fairly proud of this. Some pioneers are even financially supported by royalty, warlords, or other monetarily inclined enthusiasts with an interest in the practice of magic.

Payment & Reimbursement

As previously mentioned, most mages earn their living by surviving and patenting new spells or techniques. Others might earn a reputation and be recruited to work for a monarch or mogul, sometimes unwillingly.

Other Benefits

The crowd will part to grant these innovative celebrities passage, though mostly because they fear one might explode at any moment. Superstition rapidly coagulates around mages thanks to the rhetoric of a religious leader who improvised a speech after losing his notes. Because of this, there are now several mage-hunting groups hell-bent on "purging" the system. One of these is, of course, the Parapoptsi and their infamous leader, Beleford Beguile.

Perception

Purpose

Mages create safe methods of applying magic and are credited for discovering organization in this chaotic world. Objectively speaking, true mages are those who understand the underlying potential in Flux and were the foundation of nearly every civilization since its creation.

Demographics

Only about 0.05% of the population hails as a mage, and only about one-fourth of those will live for more than a year. Some Demigods seek out this profession in hopes of being accepted by @Fluxers. Unfortunately, this has never been successful.

Operations

Materials

Mages do not require any specific tools, but occasionally experiment on talismans, amulets, slaves, etc.

Workplace

The majority of who claim this profession wander the Five Lands in search of a greater understanding. Obviously, some mages are more celebrities than researchers, and will settle down in one place.

Provided Services

They create different magical applications (or "spells") which can be used to perform various tasks.

Dangers & Hazards

Reality is perception, and if one strays too far they'll find that life can't be supported on the Flying Flux. When this happens, the mage's perspective changes and they will usually die. They also happen to be at a greater risk for drowning, though no one really knows why.
