Kalypolis

History

Kalypolis was a centre of trade and iron production, receiving barges from along the River Clyx carrying iron ore to the city to be smelted down. The city was partially constructed on top of polders that stretched out into the ocean, and large walls surrounded the city on all sides to protect it from storms and invasions. A naval chain system also existed that could have been raised across the harbour to prevent ships from leaving or entering.   The harbour had three entrances. One lay to east and faced the open sea, flanked on both sides by huge iron statues. The southern entrance was used by fishermen and was connected to a canal system that brought small ships directly into the marketplace. The north entrance was only accessible through an archway and was normally kept shut, being used in religious ceremonies (such as sending out colonists or in times of war). The wooden gates bore a carved relief of the God of the Sea.   The symbol of the city was a sea serpent with two heads, wrapped around a hammer.   During the Republian Wars, the city was targeted by the Rulaucarish for a naval invasion, and the remnants of the city walls, long left to decay, were reduced to ruins by the Rulaucarish naval artillery. The subsequent invasion led to a massacre in the city as local militia booby trapped the streets and retreated through a series of blockades. The invasion was a disaster for the Rulaucarish military and led to a re-evaluation of marine procedure, with a greater focus on isolating landing zones and less on naval firepower.
