Pan Shield

Delicious Defence

Written by Endrise

It obvious is better to get an actual shield to protect yourself.
— Wandering Adventurer
Pan Shields are an unique form of defence found on some adventurers. A combination of a regular cooking pan with that of a buckler, it mixes the benefits of protection with culinary utensils.

Cooking & Combat

A Pan Shield is a circular black shield the width of one's upper arm, with two handles at either side that hold the handle tight. From afar, it would appear as a simple buckler.   With a built-in hinge, the handle can be tilted sideways to change it into a cooking plate. One can then keep it over an open fire to easily prepare any food they have. One can boil some ingredients in the center, while the outer rim's grill pattern allows one to bake meat and other stuff.   The handle's heat-resistant nature also allows one to pick it back up fast in case of a surprise attack, even if doing so may cost one their meal for the evening.

Origins

The origins of the pan shield depend on which story you consider true.   The first story claims its roots come from adventurers during travels needing a pan for cooking, but forgot them beforehand. To compensate for a lack of a proper pan, they took their buckler and placed it over the fire to cook instead, becoming a tradition with other ones over time.   The other story instead claims one adventurer got caught without a shield, and used their cooking pan instead to fend off a monster. With it came the idea to reinforce their cooking utensils.
