The Twin Queens

Ere they watch
Backs to the harbor
Spears to the Sea
Crowned Queens of Stone
Ere they watch over me
-Inscription carved on the baseplate of the Fortress known as the Westerly Queen

The fortresses are named such for their regal bearing, and the fact that they are the arbiter of all ships which enter Amaram Harbor, for neither ironclad nor the most fleet of sail could pass underneath or beside either fort without being left as splinters floating on the water.   Each fort sits on either of the enclosing arms of the initial, largest, Dosceío. The fort known as the Westerly Queen sits at ocean level, its throne having been built out of stone pillars driven into a sandy beach by determined Oscallers. The perfect vantage point to monitor those that sail by. The sister, the Easterly Queen, sits above the Westerly on a cliff that dramatically juts off of the mountain known as Tidebreaker Peak. The height gives the fort unexpected range, preventing most naval ships from even returning fire while it rains shells down upon their decks.

Alterations

In the intervening centuries since the construction of the Twins, war has changed and they have changed with it.   Originally, they had been constructed for the age of pike and shot and featured large curtain walls that took more inspiration from medieval design than modern architecture. In XVI.1008 the Naval Council saw what warfare was becoming, and hired engineers to bring the Twins in line with contemporary sensibilities.   While the project was originally supposed to be a two-year update, it became a seven-year reconstruction that tore down and rebuilt much of the original structure. I've yet to find a government that liked spending money, especially when it was more than originally expected, but in the end, both forts were the spitting image of modern fortress construction.    Two star-forts, regal in bearing.
