The Magical Library
The Magical Library is a wide three-story building made of blue stone, similar to the Mages' Guildhall, but with large pillars on all sides. It is open to all the Enclave citizens. Inside, it is a no-nonsense library full of meticulously catalogued tomes and scrolls. Librarians, all of whom are trained magic-users (particularly in the Knowledge school), keep sharp eyes on all patrons, and members of the Enclave Watch guard all doors. It is not a lending library, and there are stiff penalties for attempting to steal books. Although the stacks can be browsed at will, all shelves are protected by a transparent shield of magical force. The librarians can deactivate portions of the field upon request, so that patrons can use the materials.
The Magical Library is somewhat misnamed. Although the basement and ground floor are devoted to magical works, the upper 2 floors are packed with more mundane works on nature, science, religion, philosophy, history, etc. Also, actual arcane spells are not found in the Library. Access to these is controlled by the members of the Mages' Guild. The third floor was recently reorganized to make space for the 'Outside Collection', devoted to making current information about the Outside available to all.
The librarians publish a weekly newspaper, called The Gazette, which is widely read and covers current events in the Enclave. Citizens often submit stories to the librarians for publication.
Part of the Library's basement is a repository of magical items (known as the Crib) that are the property of the Enclave as a whole. The Enclave Council sometimes loans these items to citizens who can put them to good use. A list of the items is available from the keepers of The Crib. The keepers are also rumored to have a secret list of more powerful items.
There are many gaps in the Library's coverage, particularly pertaining to history and the Outside world. Legend says that part of the Library was destroyed in the distant past. In a neighborhood immediately south of the Library, many of the buildings are partly constructed of rough pieces of blackened blue stone that are thought to have composed a destroyed wing of the Library.
Temples and guildhalls also commonly keep small libraries, although the main catalog at the Magical Library records many of their collections as well. The Mages' Guild is rumored to contain a small library of particularly powerful arcana that only its most senior members can access.
