Blackmere Bridge
The BLACKMERE BRIDGE is the only lowland crossing available to those needing to transit across the BLACKMERE RIVER ravine. This gouge runs from the foothills of the mountains until the river meets the sea. The bridge follows the old Throneway and is warded by the RAVENS who receive the proceeds from the bridge toll. In return, the SISTERS maintain a watch over the bridge for security purposes. The tolls from the bridge are a significant boon to the reclusive martial order.
When crossing the bridge, even though the river lies less than a hundred feet below, the view is well-regarded. To the east, the slope of the land drops steadily allowing all of the rivers to flow quickly to the Sea of Winds. WIth the added height, one can see the coast on clear days. And to the west, one's eye travels directly up to the protruding cliffs that spring forth from the Giantspine Mountains to push past the hills and into the lowlands. One's eye follows the river up along its carved, winding way to see the fabled Ravenscrag Keep-once a place of foul deeds and known as the Corpse-Hall-now it is headquarters and home to the most storied martial sororitas in the kingdom. From the bridge, it looms off the cliff face like it grew naturally and commands the eye.
Defenses
The usual contingent is four to six foot soldiers taken from the ranks of the Raven’s all-female mundane troops. These troops are usually split evenly on either side of the tower. These soldiers are overseen by one to two sister-knights. These individuals are usually posted for an entire moon or more and keep close from a fortified manor within sight.
History
A bridge over the Blackmere River has existed since before the granting of the Corpse-Hall to RAVEN CIRCLE. In -138 BL, the keep and its lands were granted to the Circle. There have been several incarnations of the bridge over the generations with each maintained and restored when it fell apart. The first stone bridge built by the CIRCLE was in -74 BL. The current bridge is the second full construction undertaken by them. The current bridge was built in -48 BL and is over a century old.
