Steel Yard Market

If you plan to go shopping in the steel yard, there is only one place to go and that is the market. Stepping through the doors and into the interior of the steel mill, visitors are at once overwhelmed by the cacophany of noise and assault of smells that comes from the market place. Traders bellow out their prices or argue with their curtomers while mystery meats sizzle away on hot plates waiting to be consumed. Everything can be bought here, from live animals to salvaged electronics, clothing both recycled and brand new from Adelaide, guns, ammo, household supplies, freshly cooked food, and ancient relics rescued from the ruins.   The market stalls themselves tend to be maixture of simple tables heaped with goods, or portable stalls that can be wheeled in, and then wheeled out at the end of the day. On the gantries above the ground floor, food and smaller objects are sold from trays by strolling merchants.   There are typically at least two milita on patrol during opening hours, and the whole market is overlooked by the mayors office from the northern end of the vast chamber.

Architecture

The high vaulted ceiling of the steel mill goes up four stories, with gantries and beams criss crossing above until you reach the corrugated steel roof. Gaurds frequently have to yell at the small children who think it is both fun and safe to climb up into the darkened metal rafters. Old and rusting steel chains hang from long dissused pulleys, and little light filters in from the windows high above, so much of the light is electric.

History

Originally this part of the steel mill was the workshop floor where large metal objects were cast in steel.

Tourism

While the quality of goods available in the enclaves is far better than anything the people of the steel yard could produce, there remain a few enticements for visiting tourists such as authentic fresh cooked market food, salvaged antiquities, and memorabilia relating to the steel mill fight pits. Plus there is always the chance you could bump into a real life pit fighter.
